The species on the label tells you what your bed will look like. What decides how it sleeps is the gap between the slats underneath, which is the one measurement nearly every listing in this category leaves out. Warranties on foam and hybrid mattresses commonly ask for no more than about 7 to 8 cm (3 in) of air between one slat and the next, so a wide-slatted frame can cost you the cover on the mattress you put on it. Get a tape measure out first.

So this isn't about oak, it's about what your mattress ends up lying on.

Solid timber, veneered panel and painted MDF all get sold as wooden beds. Check the edge of a headboard or a side rail before you decide which one you're holding. Solid wood carries its grain round the corner and onto the end, where a veneer stops dead at a glued seam. That's the whole test.

Neither one's a fake, whatever you've been told: panel products sit still, ignore the seasons and take a painted finish better than oak ever will. Plenty of the frames you like the look of are panel underneath. They just won't take a bolt tightened and loosened for fifteen years, which is roughly where the price gap in this category sits.

Timber buys you repairability, since a loose joint here is a bolt and an Allen key where a welded metal bed would need replacing. That costs you weight, plus an assembly session and a lifetime habit of listening for creaks. Oak sawdust smells like a school woodwork room, which is neither here nor there.

Half of what holds you up sits under the mattress rather than in it. Ergonomics researchers modelling how to choose the right support for a given body found they could not leave the base out of the sums, and even with it in, their predictions missed 3D scans of real backs by a little over a centimetre on average.1 Which is why the slats belong with the support, not the styling.

Sprung slats are the part I'd argue with. They bow under load and hand back a softness you already paid the mattress to provide. On a medium-firm bed that's the one place I don't want the frame having an opinion. Solid slats, close together, then let the mattress do the job you bought it for.

That comes with a bias and you may as well have it up front. Firmness ratings tend to read straight to me and a notch firmer to anyone lighter, so what I'd call fair support is somebody else's slightly hard bed. If you're on the light side, go a step softer than I'd pick, and sprung slats will read as give rather than sag.

It isn't the frame for everybody.

Move house every year and a solid oak super king becomes something you'll resent on a staircase, where a divan splits into two halves one person can carry. Timber won't articulate either, so if you want the head end raised you're looking at an adjustable base and a different page.

What if the gaps come out too wide?

Measure face to face, not centre to centre. Whatever span you leave unsupported is what the mattress has to bridge.

Foam's got nothing inside it to bridge with, so it settles into each void and your first dip forms between the slats rather than under your hip. Pocket springs cope better, since each one's carrying its own share. Fixing it's cheap either way: close the span with a denser slat pack, or with a sheet of ply cut to the inside of the rails, for about the price of a takeaway. Do it before the first night, not after a manufacturer's asked you for photographs.

Centre rail, centre legs and the king-size problem

Above a double, ask what runs down the middle. A king at 150 by 200 cm and a super king at 180 by 200 leave half a metre more slat to cross than a single does. Your slats travel further exactly where the two of you put your weight. What stops them deflecting is a centre rail with legs to the floor, though you'll find some frames give one leg where others give three.

Plenty of listings mention neither, so ask before your order goes in. There's no neat way to prop up a sagging centre once the bed's built.

Why has your wooden bed started squeaking?

Because timber moves. Wood takes on and gives up moisture with the room's humidity, so a frame that went together tight in August won't be tight by midwinter. Then the bolts loosen, the slat ends shift and wood rubs on wood, which isn't a defect so much as timber behaving like timber.

Go round every bolt after a month, then once a year, and don't skip the felt pads. Squeak is also the fault that only shows itself when two people move at different times, so if you share a bed, ask about it. Sleep alone and you can own the same frame for years without ever hearing it.

Sizes, and why your frame is bigger than your mattress

UK mattress sizes are fixed: small single 75 by 190 cm, single 90 by 190, small double 120 by 190, double 135 by 190, king 150 by 200 and super king 180 by 200. In feet and inches that's 2'6", 3'0", 4'0", 4'6", 5'0" and 6'0".

Your frame isn't fixed at all, because headboards, foot ends and side panels add a few centimetres to each dimension, sometimes fifteen. So measure your alcove, not your mattress. Footboards eat floor space a headboard-only build gives you back.

You're trading floor space against 30 cm (12 in) of extra width between king and super king, so in most bedrooms the floor wins.

Does storage change the size you should buy?

It can, which is the strongest argument for it. Drawers or an ottoman base turn the dead space under your bed into usable space, so a chest doesn't need to stay in the room. You'll often win back more floor than the bigger frame costs you.

Drawers need side clearance to open fully, where an ottoman needs headroom at the foot end and doesn't care about the sides.

One caveat gets skipped constantly: a gas lift sized for a heavy mattress takes a proper shove to get moving, and nobody specs it for a lighter person doing the job alone. Try it with the mattress on top, never empty.

Durability is a claim almost nobody publishes

BS EN 1725:2023 sets safety, strength and durability requirements for beds, covering the frame, the base and the mattress where it's supplied as one unit with them.2 Hardly any UK bed listing publishes a result against it, so where a listing calls a frame durable it's describing an intention rather than a result.

Construction is what you can read instead, so look for bolt-through fixings rather than cam locks and dowels. Then a centre rail on anything king or wider, plus solid timber at the joints even where the panels are veneered. You can see all three in the photographs if you zoom in. None of it's hidden.

Species and finish, and what they change

Oak, ash and walnut are dense hardwoods that take a knock and price accordingly. Pine and rubberwood run softer, lighter and cheaper, so they'll dent where you shove a bedside table against them.

A painted finish hides the joint line a natural one shows, which is why panel builds are usually painted and solid oak isn't. It doesn't change how you sleep, though. No research separates oak from pine for sleep quality, because species sets your price, your delivery weight and how the room reads, not your rest. Light finishes make a small room look bigger where dark ones suit one that's already big, which is decorating rather than construction.

Is the timber certified?

Rarely stated, always worth asking. FSC chain-of-custody certification tracks timber from a certified forest through every processing and trading step, and PEFC runs a comparable scheme. Either one buys you a claim somebody independent has already checked, rather than an adjective.

Certification's missing from almost every bed listing. Ask anyway. Whatever comes back tells you how well a seller knows their own supply chain, and certified stock comes with a code you can quote.

What about a padded headboard?

Plenty of wooden frames arrive with a fabric panel at the head end, which in law makes it upholstered furniture. The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 count beds and their headboards as furniture, set ignition resistance requirements for them, and require a permanent label to show it.3 Check yours has one.

Cleaning is the other thing you're taking on, since fabric behind your head picks up hair oil and a removable cover is the difference between a wash and a specialist. That counts for more here than on a floorstanding headboard. Plain timber has neither problem, and nothing soft to lean on either.

Common questions

Does BedBoy test wooden bed frames?

No, it doesn't. There's no tested badge on this site and there never was one. Nothing here has been assembled, loaded or slept on by anybody who writes for it, and pretending otherwise would be the easiest lie in this trade to tell. What sits behind the ranking is the published specification, the pooled owner reviews and one rubric applied the same way to every frame. How we score has the detail. It'll get you a defensible sort order, though it won't tell you how the joints sound after two winters. That's why the sections above stick to things you can see or measure yourself.

Is assembling a wooden bed a two-person job?

For anything double or wider, yes. One person can manage a single frame alone, though there'll be swearing. Two parts are awkward: holding a side rail square while your first bolts go in, and lifting a headboard that carries its weight up at the top. Most bed frames this size turn up flat-packed in two or three boxes, so budget an hour for a plain one and closer to two if there are drawers. Clear a floor area bigger than the bed before you start, then add half an hour again for anything in kids with a ladder bolted to it. Count on the Allen key in the box being too short.

Can you put a memory foam mattress on sprung slats?

Yes, as long as the spacing is inside what your warranty asks for. Sprung slats flex downwards under load, which adds give on top of whatever the mattress is already doing. On a foam bed that's softness you've paid for once. Foam and latex don't care about the curve, they care about the span. If you want your mattress behaving the way it did when you chose it, solid slats at close spacing are the neutral base and sprung ones are a deliberate softening. You can't rescue a mattress that's wrong for your position with either of them.

How much weight will a wooden bed frame take?

Almost nobody publishes a figure, which is the answer and it's also the annoying part. One reference point does exist: BS EN 1725 bases its strength tests on beds used by people up to 110 kg (17 st 4 lb).2 That's the load the test regime assumes, not a promise about the frame you're looking at. Where a limit is stated it normally covers everything on the bed, so both of you plus the mattress, and a deep pocket unit eats a chunk of it first. Ask whether a centre leg is included, because that leg carries the middle. If load is what you're shopping on, the heavier sleepers shortlist starts there too.

Will a solid oak frame crack once the heating goes on?

Crack, rarely. Move, always. Timber shrinks across the grain as the air dries, so a wide oak headboard panel can open a hairline gap at a joint through the first winter. It'll close again by spring, which decent joinery expects, leaving the panel room to travel inside its frame. Keep the bed off a radiator, run the room at a sane humidity and re-tighten the bolts once the heating season settles in. A gap that keeps widening year on year isn't the weather, it's a joinery fault.
