Two adults on one mattress is one of the most common ways a bed gets bought in the UK, and one of the worst served by the marketing. The bed has to cope with two bodies, two preferences and two different times of getting up, and keep doing it for ten to fifteen years without one of you losing the argument every night for a decade. The dual-firmness solution
Most couples can find a single-firmness mattress that works for both partners; medium-firm is the default that gets quoted in the showroom more often than any other. The problem is the case where one partner weighs significantly more than the other. Above a forty per cent weight differential between partners (say, sixty kilograms and ninety kilograms across a king-size bed), the heavier partner compresses the comfort layer further and ends up sleeping in a depression while the lighter partner rests on a firmer surface. You both wake up tired, for opposite reasons, and neither of you can work out why.
The structural answer is a dual-firmness configuration. Two options exist on the UK market. A zip-and-link mattress is two single mattresses zipped together at the headline dimension, so each partner gets a different tension grade and the join sits under the centre seam. A split-firmness mattress is built with different tensions on the two halves of a single sleep surface, joined at the manufacturing stage. Zip-and-link sits at the premium end, costs more, and lets you replace one side without buying a whole new bed. Split-firmness is more of a mid-range thing, harder to track down, and sometimes the simpler answer. If you're genuinely mismatched, I'd spend the money on the zip-and-link and stop arguing about it.

Motion isolation, and it isn't close once you pool what people say about sharing. A mattress that wakes you every time your partner turns over has failed at the only job it had, whatever it scores on comfort or temperature. I share a bed. This is the category I check first and I'd suggest you do the same. The construction that handles motion transfer best is hybrid: pocket-spring core with a memory-foam comfort layer. Pure pocket sprung transmits some movement through the spring sheet; pure memory foam isolates motion as well as anything but at the cost of sleeping warm and being harder to turn on.
What size mattress is best for couples?
King size (150cm × 200cm) is the floor for two adults sharing a bed nightly. Super king (180cm × 200cm) gives each partner the equivalent of a single bed's width, and is the recommended size where either partner is over six feet tall or the bedroom can accommodate it. Standard double (135cm × 190cm) is workable for couples used to it, but each partner has about sixty-eight centimetres of width: shoulder-to-shoulder on the average adult build with no room to turn without disturbing the other partner.
How do you choose a mattress when partners want different firmness?
There are three routes. Compromise on a medium-firm single-firmness mattress that sits between both preferences, which works where the firmness preferences are within one step of each other. Buy a zip-and-link mattress where two singles are joined at the headline dimension, each in a different tension grade; this is the structurally cleanest route and the most expensive. Or buy a split-firmness mattress where one product has different tensions on each side of a single surface, which is harder to source but cheaper. Why does edge support matter for couples?
Because you sleep further apart than you think you do, so the part of the mattress you actually use is nearer the edges than the middle. A mattress with poor edge support effectively shrinks under two adult loads: six-foot surface, four-foot usable area, two adults pushed into a middle neither of them wanted. A high-spring-count pocket-spring core with a reinforced perimeter, or a hybrid with a foam edge support layer, holds the shape and keeps the usable width what the marketing says. Edge support also affects getting in and out of bed, which you notice more when you share.
Memory foam or hybrid for couples?
Hybrid wins for the largest slice of couples. A pocket-spring core with a memory-foam comfort layer handles motion isolation almost as well as pure memory foam without the heat penalty, and edge support better than either pure construction alone. Pure memory foam edges out hybrid on motion isolation alone, but tends to sleep hot and feel like quicksand for couples with one or both partners running warm. Pure pocket sprung is the cool-sleep choice but transmits more partner movement. Bedroom temperature, body type, and turning frequency between partners decide which of the three works best.
