Returns and refunds
Where to find a retailer's returns policy
Every retailer we feature publishes its own returns and refunds policy on their website. Look for headings such as "Returns", "Delivery and returns", or "Help centre". Most retailers state:
- How long after delivery you can return an item
- Whether the item must be unopened or unused
- Who pays for collection or return shipping
- How long refunds take to reach your account
Read the policy before you buy. Mattresses are usually classed as bulky items, and many retailers will not collect them once the packaging has been removed.
Your statutory rights
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods sold to you in the UK must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If a product is faulty or misdescribed you are entitled to a refund, repair or replacement from the retailer who sold it to you. These rights are in addition to any voluntary returns window the retailer offers.
The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give you 14 days from delivery to cancel most online purchases for any reason, although a retailer can refuse cancellation for hygiene-sensitive items (mattress protectors, pillows and bedding) once the seal has been broken. Bespoke or made-to-order items are also typically excluded.
Trial periods and comfort guarantees
Several retailers we link to offer a "sleep trial" of between 60 and 200 nights, during which you can return a mattress for a full refund or exchange. The terms differ by retailer, so always check the trial-period details on the product page or in the retailer's help centre before completing your purchase.
If something goes wrong
Contact the retailer first. They are responsible for resolving your complaint under the Consumer Rights Act. If you cannot reach a resolution, you may be able to escalate through:
- The retailer's nominated alternative dispute resolution scheme (often listed in their terms)
- Your credit card provider, if the order was over £100 and paid by credit card (Section 75 Consumer Credit Act 1974)
- Citizens Advice consumer helpline at citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/ (opens in new tab)
Got questions about a BedBoy product page or guide?
If your question is about something on the editorial side of the site (a product page, guide or article) rather than something you bought, email [email protected]. We can't help with order or refund queries; those must go to the retailer.
