Marketed spring counts have crept up steadily over the past decade and now tell you almost nothing about support. This is the number I spend most of my time correcting. The figure to look for is active spring count at king size: the number of springs in a single working layer at the standard adult dimension. A mattress marketed as 'three thousand pocket springs' often comprises a one-thousand-five-hundred-spring main core with one thousand five hundred microcoils stacked above; the marketing adds the two layers, but only the main core does the supporting work.
The active-count bands sort cleanly into four tiers. Below eight hundred active springs at king size is the budget end and acceptable only for guest rooms or short-term use. Eight hundred to one thousand five hundred is the mid-range mainstream, fine for most adult use. One thousand five hundred to two thousand is the upper mainstream and still adds genuine support. Two thousand and above is premium, and that's where the returns start diminishing. Above three thousand you're in marketing territory. The structural advantage has flattened out, and what you're paying for is the cover, the comfort layer or the badge on the label, whatever the box says.
