About the TheraPur ActiGel® Glacier 1800 Combination Mattress

Last checked

The TheraPur ActiGel® Glacier 1800 uses a pocket-sprung core with ActiGel® foam, PurFibre® and a knitted ActiCool® cover, placing it firmly in combination-mattress territory rather than a plain sprung build overall. It is firm, 5 of 5. Under load, pocket springs are a meaningful step over open-coil mattresses because each spring can compress with less drag from its neighbours, so a back sleeper’s pelvis is supported without the whole surface bowing as one panel. That matters here. The comfort package is cooling-led: gel in the quilting, responsive fibre above the spring unit and a cushion top intended to add depth before the sleeper meets the firmer support below. The spec is honest: the surface treatment moderates a taut build rather than disguising it, and the cushion top should add initial give without changing the mattress into a plush, body-cradling design. A hypoallergenic finish is a practical hygiene cue rather than a comfort layer, while the UK-made construction and layered top package make the Glacier 1800 feel more technically dressed than a basic firm pocket-sprung mattress.

The firm spring-and-gel mix points most clearly towards back sleepers, where a flatter sleep surface helps keep the pelvis from dipping and the lumbar area from being left unsupported. Stomach sleepers who like a braced feel may also be well served, because the tension should resist hip sink better than a softer, deeper-cushioned mattress would over a full night. Side sleepers need caution. The fit is honest rather than universal: on a broader-shouldered or hourglass frame, the same firm response that helps back alignment can leave the shoulder and hip riding high, with less room for pressure to disperse. Average-to-heavier back sleepers are the clearest match, as their weight is more likely to engage the spring unit while still benefiting from the stabilising surface; lighter sleepers may experience the top as firmer because they compress the cushion top less readily. Temperature is a stronger part of the suitability story than usual for a firm support model, since ActiGel® quilting and the ActiCool® knitted cover are both aimed at reducing the warm, close feel that some cushioned mattresses develop. For couples, the pocket springs should help limit movement spreading across the bed, though different body weights will still read the firm tension differently.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Firm 5 of 5 tension supports back sleepers by resisting pelvic dip on a flatter surface.
  • Pocket springs compress independently, helping couples limit movement spreading across the bed.
  • ActiGel® quilting and an ActiCool® knitted cover target a less warm, close feel.
  • Cushion top adds initial give before the sleeper reaches the firmer support below.

Cons

  • Side sleepers with broader shoulders may find the firm 5 of 5 response leaves shoulders high.
  • Hourglass frames can lack pressure dispersion because firm tension gives hips less room to sink.
  • Lighter sleepers may experience extra firmness because they compress the cushion top less readily.
  • Buyers wanting a plush, body-cradling design will not get it from the firm cushion top.

Frequently Asked Questions For The TheraPur ActiGel® Glacier 1800 Combination Mattress

The questions below are the most common ones BedBoy readers ask when comparing products in this category. Contact the editorial team with a different question, quoting 131-01082 in the subject line.

A few customers have recorded issues with body impressions or sagging after a some weeks of use. However, the mattress does come with a 10-year guarantee, so any issues related to sagging due to manufacturing faults should be addressed by the manufacturer.
This mattress may not be the best choice for side sleepers or individuals with hourglass figures because of its very firm tension. Side sleepers generally need a mattress with more sinkage to properly accommodate their hips and shoulders. However, for back sleepers or stomach sleepers, this firm tension can provide ideal support.
Yes, this mattress is finished with a fully hypoallergenic cover, which is great for allergy sufferers. It is designed to resist dust mites and other allergens which can cause discomfort for individuals with allergies or respiratory conditions.
The very firm comfort grade of this mattress provides the highest level of support, making it a good choice for back or stomach sleepers. However, some customers have found it too firm to their liking, especially side sleepers who may need a slightly softer mattress for comfort.
The cooling feature of the mattress is made possible through ActiGel® technology embedded in the quilted top layer. This technology keeps the cooling gel as close to your body as possible to aid in temperature regulation. However, its effectiveness may be reduced with the use of thick mattress protectors or bed sheets. Best regards, Giselle

Nice and firm without feeling like a plank, and its helped my back feel better in the mornings. It does stay a bit cooler than our old mattress, though its not a miracle if youve got a thick protector on. Took me a few nights to get used to the firmness but Im sleeping more soundly now. Overall it feels well made and decent value.

Jamiel in the Potters Bar branch made the experience in store for us so easy from start to finish. He made it clear to us which mattress was best for our needs. He was very attentive throughout and gave us many options and prices to consider. We were impressed so much that we even stretched our budget to get something more suitable for our needs and were glad we did! The delivery was seamless, Ive never seen men move so fast up and down with a mattress over two flights of stairs. We definitely picked the best mattress. Our sleep has improved my back pain is much less, could not be happier. Thank you Dreams!

I recently took my 79yr Dad to Cheltenham Dreams to buy his first brand new bed. He did know he wanted a very firm mattress but apart from that he didnt have a idea of what was a good bed to buy. Thank goodness for Aaron. He was fantastic & took a long time showing my Dad all the different beds & firm mattresses. He showed Dad all the beds, which included Dreams beds, or other more expensive ones. Aaron put us under no pressure whatsoever to buy from Dreams or to purchase the more expensive bed. He described the differences in the beds very well & clear. Aaron made the whole experience seemless & due to Aaron's professionalism & outstanding advice Dad chose Dreams to purchase his new bed from. He's extremely happy with his purchase & was very impressed how quickly the two delivery drivers got his bed put together & ready to use. We'd definitely recommend to friends.

I have to say, Im not sure if the cool touch thing works but nevertheless, this is the softest and most comfy mattress Ive ever had. I feel like I wake up enveloped in a hug every morning. Its very hard to leave bed in the morning. Service from Dreams has been amazing. Delivery guys were expert and turned up earlier than delivery slot.

This mattress is just perfect, I used to sleep on my side all the time but its be a waste not to sleep on your back with this. It properly supports your body while not compromising on comfort, truely like having a hotel bed in your own home.
