About the Flaxby Masters Guild 4450 Pillow Top Mattress
Last checked
Natural fibres do the main comfort work here: British wool, hemp and cotton sit over a 4,005-spring pocket unit in the double size, with the Flaxby Masters Guild 4450 Pillow Top Mattress rated medium, 3 of 5. It is a serious natural build. A 4,005 count with Cortec and DNAir springs is generous against the conventional 1,000-2,000 pocket-sprung tier, and the absence of foam, glue and chemical FR treatments is unusual even among premium-feeling pillow tops, where synthetic foams often provide the easy plushness. The practical trade-off is that this is still a pillow-top mattress, so the first impression comes from the quilted upper layers before the spring unit takes over; wool, hemp and cotton can feel more buoyant and drier than memory foam, but they do not give the slow, sinking contour some side sleepers associate with foam hybrids. The targeted spring language points to extra response around the lower back, hips and shoulders, although the support will still feel more traditionally sprung than body-moulding. Traditional tufting helps hold the fillings in place, and the recyclable Cortec spring story is more substantive than most eco wording in this category, but the 7-year guarantee is fairly normal for a mattress pitched above the entry-level pocket-sprung market.
The medium tension and pillow-top surface put this closest to side and mixed sleepers of average build, especially those wanting pressure relief without the enveloping heat of memory foam. Happier accounts describe a plump, supportive surface, better sleep, and a natural feel that matches the wool-cotton-hemp spec; the split comfort option also earns praise where partners want medium on one side and firm on the other. Back sleepers who like a level, taut surface may find the medium version softer than ideal over time, and one recent account says the delivered mattress felt firmer than expected at first while the cushioned top later flattened. Settlement is the main concern. Multiple low-scoring accounts describe dips developing within roughly a year, sometimes despite rotation, with the hollow affecting sleep position and aggravating back discomfort; that repeated owner feedback cuts against the premium natural-fill promise more sharply than the specification suggests. Edge feel also draws criticism, with the sides described as sloping outwards and reducing usable width, which matters for couples sharing a double or for anyone who sleeps near the border. Weight also affects day-to-day ownership. The mattress is repeatedly described as heavy to rotate, so the care routine needed to limit impressions is not effortless. For average-weight side sleepers who value natural fillings and a buoyant pillow-top feel, this is the more convincing fit. For firmer back support, stronger edges or anxiety about body impressions, look at a firmer non-pillow-top pocket-sprung tier instead.

Feels really comfy on top but still supportive, and it doesnt get too hot at night which I like. The delivery took ages and the box looked a bit battered, but the mattress itself has been good so far.
Extremely well crafted, this mattress has enriched the quality of my sleep. Ideal firmness and great contouring support that leads to soothing relaxation.
Cosiest mattress ever. The computer programme in store led us to this choice. So pleased with it.
I was extremely dubious about purchasing this mattress and had been looking at the reviews for a good couple of months before taking the plunge. I went in Dreams several times to lay on it and make sure I wasn't making any bad decisions. It felt like the mattress was just hugging you right back when you laid on it! Good support in the lower back area too as I have a permanent slipped disc and spinal arthritis so I had to be 110% certain I was getting the right mattress. I have now had this mattress for over two months. My patter goes like this: sleep on one side for 7 days, then sleep on the other side. Then rotate the mattress and repeat the first steps. It is quite heavy to rotate but I'm just relieved I have finally found the perfect mattress again after 13 years of agony and going through about 5 different mattresses! There is no dipping as I rotate the mattress regularly - I am only 9st just over so not really big enough to be making the bed dip. I have a mattress protector on the bed, and use medium pillows. I am sleeping like a dream. I now manage to have nights where I sleep right through without waking for the loo or with pain! I no longer wake up with back pain anymore. I really am one happy lady! Would definitely recommend this mattress to others BUT if you are on the larger side, go for a firm it will soften over time, as seen other reviews saying this mattress dips so I guess if your on the heavy side you may or may not have an issue. Have attached pictures of when I first got the mattress compared with 3 months later and as you can see, no dips and looks just as good. I also bought the bed frame from dreams too.
We tried the memory foam. They did not agree with us at all. Ordered the Flaxby - which you can customise. Not looked back. Firm mattress with a built in topper. I can sit up in bed to read AND have a hot water bottle in winter - you cant do that in a (full-on) memory foam. Slightly more transference of movement in this mattress but we had a king size made of 2 singles which has helped a lot. The mattress has also received the cats seal of approval!
Quality mattress very comfortable! We bought the medium firmness .. not too firm not too soft. Very happy :oD
Great comfortable mattress that suits me perfectly. Very well built
I did a lot of research to find the right mattress. After a lengthy period hunting, I came across this model within the Flaxby range. It has everything that my partner and I were looking for. We had put up with our previous mattress for far too long so we decided to make an investment. We have not been disappointment at all. Considering that this only comes in either a medium/firm or firm, I was surprised at just how comfortable the medium/firm actually is. We sink into it. The pillow top does help. We've only had the mattress a few nights and know that we are getting the best sleep ever as it is a world famous Harrison Spinks. The mattress is a lot taller than our old one, and I was worried that the sheets wouldn't fit as a result and we would have to by king size sheets, but everything fits perfectly. Oh, aches and pains in my neck have vanished. Suffering with pains when you wake up, then do yourself a favour and get a Flaxby. You will not be disappointed. Hand made is BEST made.
Mattress delivered on time, and the mattress itself is super comfy, really happy with my purchase
This mattress is just unbelievably comfortable and warm. My husband and I both think it is so supportive and would hesitate to tell anyone to purchase the Flaxbys finest 4450 mattress.
Beautifully made, superb quality and incredible comfort
Comfy, soft and all natural
Amazing nights sleep with this mattress. Went for a Super King and boy is it Super!! Love it and would recommend
Very comfortable and happy with my purchase
Very pleased with my purchase, was sceptical parting with my money especially with only trying it for a short while instore. We were sold on the mattress description and association with Harrison Spinks. The mattress was dispatched within the quoted timeframe and the delivery men were superb. Have been sleeping on the mattress for 3 weeks and have had no issues, its come exactly as described , weve rotated it weekly as per the instructions and can see us being happy for many sleeps ahead.
For a handmade mattress, this is an amazing mattress, unfortunately it doesn't completely fit my daughter's double bed, it's like it's slightly smaller than a double mattress, it falls slightly shorter in length and width. (By an inch or so). Also, where it has the topper part on it, the mattress protectors and fitted sheets don't fit or sit well on it. This being said, the comfort, well that is great, my daughter can finally sleep well, she suffers with hypermobility and she is finally sleeping without pain in her joints.
Very comfortable. I wasn't initially sure about having a pillow top, but having tried about 12 mattresses in the showroom this one stood apart from the rest.
Wonderful mattress love the natural feel of it and the support.
Wonderful mattress - so comfy and been sleeping better than I have in a long time
Whilst the mattress is comfortable, it is a lot firmer than I had originally anticipated based on the one in the store. We ordered the medium, and were warned that the mattress would need some time to "relax" when we first receive it. However, I have found the cushioned topper has relaxed insofar as it now seems to have flattened and doesn't offer the same softness that it had done previously. The outside edges also slope outwards, making the bed feel smaller, and needing thicker pillows due to this.
