About the Flaxby Masters Guild 8150 Pocket Sprung Mattress

Last checked

Seasonal turning is the main idea behind the Flaxby Masters Guild 8150: one face uses cotton for a cooler summer feel, while the wool side is intended to feel warmer in winter. The feel is firm, 5 of 5, so the support is deliberately upright rather than sink-in. Its Cortec™ spring unit is pitched as glue-free and recyclable, with natural British wool, hemp, cotton and flax doing the comfort work instead of foam; in practical terms, that means a drier, more breathable surface feel, but less of the close contouring associated with memory-foam hybrids. This is a purposefully old-school build. The traditionally tufted finish helps hold those loose natural fillings in place, and the two rows of side stitching are a durability-minded detail rather than just decoration, especially on a mattress that is designed to be turned. A foam-free, chemical-FR-free natural-fibre specification is generous against mainstream pocket-sprung mattresses that rely heavily on polyester wadding and polyurethane comfort layers, although the firmness and tufting also make the surface more textured and less cushioned than pillowtop builds in the premium pocket-sprung tier.

The firm tension makes most sense for back sleepers, and for some front sleepers who need the pelvis held level rather than dipping into the bed. Back sleeping is its safest match. Praise clusters around the mattress feeling supportive, comfortably firm and cooler in warm weather, which lines up with the breathable spring unit and the cotton, wool, hemp and flax fillings rather than contradicting the spec. Side sleepers, especially those with broader hips or shoulders, have a clearer risk: the same firm support that keeps a back sleeper aligned can leave pressure points under the shoulder and hip, and one substantive complaint described the tufted surface as bumpy enough to create uneven contact rather than smooth cushioning. The zipped king arrangement also attracts a sharper warning, with the join blamed for a central dip and a rolling-together effect; that is a partner-sleep issue the spring and side-stitching claims do not solve. The seasonal design is liked in principle, but the summer and winter faces can be hard to tell apart when the sides look similar, so the practical benefit depends on being able to manage rotation confidently. The Flaxby suits committed back sleepers wanting a firm, foam-free natural-fibre mattress; those prioritising cushioned pressure relief or a seamless shared surface should look instead at medium pocket-sprung mattresses with a pillowtop or latex comfort layer.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Owners appreciate the dual-sided design for seasonal comfort with cooling cotton and warming wool.
  • Buyers report adaptive support from the glue-free Cortec™ springs that maintain shape over time.
  • Many find the mattress firm enough without causing discomfort or excessive sinking.
  • Recent reviewers appreciate the improved breathability provided by natural fibres, helping to regulate temperature.

Cons

  • Several users noted a dip in the middle of the king-size version, leading to an uncomfortable sleeping position.
  • Owners of the zipped version reported uneven support due to the separate mattresses rolling together.
  • Some customers found the surface bumpy and uncomfortable, affecting sleep quality.
  • A lack of labelling on the sides led to confusion about seasonal use.

100 Night Comfort Guarantee - gives you peace of mind when you buy

A 100 Night Comfort Guarantee allows for a trial period where the product can be tested in your own home environment to see if it meets personal comfort standards. If it doesn't meet your expectations, it can be returned for a refund or exchange, offering flexibility and assurance in purchasing decisions.

Very firm comfort rating - extra support with optimal spine alignment

A very firm comfort rating ensures robust support, promoting better posture by keeping the spine in an optimal alignment position during sleep. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing back pain or those who prefer a stable, non-yielding sleep surface.

Antibacterial design - keeps your bed clean and fresh

This helps cut down bacteria and odours, so the sleep surface stays fresher between sheet changes. It can help with hygiene and allergies, though it still needs regular washing and airing because it will not stop sweat and skin oils building up.

Responsive pocket springs - individually wrapped for targeted support

Individually wrapped pocket springs adjust independently to body contours, offering personalized support and reducing motion transfer. This construction enhances comfort by evenly distributing body weight, ensuring restful sleep.

Eco-friendly natural fillings - for sustainable comfort from nature

Natural fillings crafted from eco-friendly materials offer sustainable and environmentally conscious comfort. These fillings typically allow for better temperature regulation, providing a balanced sleep environment.

Expertly made just for you - by a team of expert bedmakers

Crafted by skilled artisans, this item ensures exceptional quality and attention to detail. It promises durability and a personalised touch, elevating the sleeping experience to a premium level.

Eco-friendly recycled fillings - for sustainable, breathable comfort

Recycled fillings contribute to environmental sustainability and offer a comfortable sleep surface. The breathable design enhances air circulation, helping to regulate temperature.

Temperature regulating - to be comfortable in any season

Really comfy and properly supportive with a nice cool feel at night, though the delivery was a bit of a faff and took longer than expected.

Very comfortable mattress. I normally prefer a mattress that is softer than firm but decided to try firm/very firm zipped combo because softer options were not available. Both firmnesses feel great, the natural fibres have helped with staying cool in the summer. The mattress is thicker than stated on the site (more than 30 cm by my measurement), but that wasn't an issue for me. There is also no labelling to indicate which side is supposed to be the summer or winter side. Both sides look identical to me.

We bought this mattress about a month ago and so far so good. It is keeping its shape and it is firm enough for my needs, plus I don't feel during the night as I did with the mattress before this one! Definitely a great buy!
