About the Dreams Workshop Carty Traditional Spring Mattress

Last checked

Traditional open-coil springs do the structural work in the Dreams Workshop Carty Traditional Spring Mattress, with a soft-touch damask cover, tufting and a Platinum 3D™ recyclable filling sitting above them for surface cushioning. The key call here is that the “million tiny springs” language is a comfort-fill description, not a pocket-spring count: compared with pocket-sprung mattresses, an open-coil unit behaves more as one linked surface under load, so support is broad and buoyant rather than individually contouring around shoulders, hips and the lumbar curve. Honest budget-traditional construction, not hybrid engineering. The hourglass coils should give decent airflow through the spring cavity, and the damask-plus-tufted finish is a conventional durability choice rather than a plush pillow-top build; tufting helps hold fillings in place, but it also gives a slightly firmer, more buttoned-down feel than loose, quilted foam layers. The Platinum 3D™ layer is the more unusual ingredient for this tier because it aims to add springy padding without relying on deep foam, which makes sense for a mattress pitched around breathability, recyclability and straightforward support. In practical terms, the Carty reads as a padded traditional sprung mattress with a resilient top layer, rather than a pressure-relief specialist or a motion-isolating couples mattress.

Back sleepers and spare-room buyers are the clearest fit, especially where the priority is a supportive, comfortable mattress without the cost or thickness of a more complex hybrid. Praise tends to cluster around immediate comfort, good value and back support, with several people describing better sleep and enough padding that the springs are not obvious through the surface; that matches the tufted open-coil build with an added springy comfort fill. The firmness story is less tidy. A repeated positive is that it feels firm-but-cosy to some, yet the most substantive complaint says the mattress marketed as firm behaves closer to medium, with inadequate lower-back support and uneven sinking on one side; where that contradicts the firmness label, the lived feedback deserves more weight than the sales wording. Couples should also be cautious if one partner is restless or much heavier, because linked open coils usually transfer movement more readily than pocket-sprung or memory-foam hybrids, and a side-to-side dipping complaint points to limited tolerance for uneven loading. Breathability is a relative strength: the coil cavity, damask cover and non-deep-foam comfort approach should suit people who dislike the warmer hug of all-foam beds, although side sleepers wanting a cradled shoulder may find the tufted surface less forgiving. The Carty suits budget-minded back sleepers, spare rooms and people who like a traditional sprung feel; those prioritising firm lumbar zoning, low partner disturbance or stronger edge-to-edge consistency should look instead at the pocket-sprung or entry hybrid tier.

Firm comfort support rating - feels solid and supportive

A firm comfort support rating indicates a mattress that provides a robust sleep surface, offering substantial support for the spine and pressure points. This level of firmness is particularly well-suited for individuals who prefer a stable and supportive sleeping area, often helpful for those with back pain or those who sleep on their stomach or back.

100 Night Comfort Guarantee - gives you peace of mind when you buy

A 100 Night Comfort Guarantee allows for a trial period where the product can be tested in your own home environment to see if it meets personal comfort standards. If it doesn't meet your expectations, it can be returned for a refund or exchange, offering flexibility and assurance in purchasing decisions.

Breathable materials - enhances airflow for cooler sleep

Frequently Asked Questions For The Dreams Workshop Carty Traditional Spring Mattress

The questions below are the most common ones BedBoy readers ask when comparing products in this category. Contact the editorial team with a different question, quoting 111-00492 in the subject line.

People using it day to day repeatedly mention not being able to feel the springs at all, which is a big difference from budget coils where you can practically count each one with your back on a bad night. The open-coil core is padded out with that 3D filling and held tight with tufting under a soft damask cover, so the surface feels more like one firm slab rather than a grid of little pressure points poking through the fabric.
Most people describe it as properly firm in a supportive way rather than rock hard, so it holds the back up without that bruised hip feeling you sometimes get with very solid beds that barely give at all. A few side sleepers and curvier shapes have said it can feel a bit unforgiving on shoulders and hips, so those who mainly curl up might find it too stiff after a full night lying in one position without much cushioning round the joints.
Feedback suggests the springs and tufting cope surprisingly well with rough use, with people mentioning children and even dogs jumping on it without dips forming or the middle sinking which is usually the first sign a mattress is on its way out. The construction is quite old-school with the tufts pinning the fillings in place, so it feels more like one solid piece that resists slumping rather than lots of loose layers that slowly wander off to the edges over time.
The 3D filling being fully recyclable means that part of the mattress can be processed at end of life instead of heading straight to landfill, which is more than most traditional coil beds can claim even if the whole thing can’t yet go into one neat recycling stream. It does not magically solve the waste problem on its own but for anyone bothered about sustainability it at least moves things a step in a better direction without sacrificing firmness or support.
The open-coil setup and that airy 3D filling give decent airflow, so it behaves more like a traditional breathable mattress than a dense foam block that traps every bit of warmth and leaves you sticking to the sheet. The damask top feels more like a classic fabric than plasticky covers, which helps moisture move away a bit instead of sitting under you in a clammy patch all night long.
The Dreams Workshop Carty Traditional Spring Mattress outshines others with its firm comfort grade for superior support. It is equipped with the Platinum 3D™ filling which creates the sensation of a million tiny springs, providing enhanced durability compared to standard foam, ensuring a cosy sleep experience. The mattress is traditionally tufted, securing the fillings and thereby adding to its longevity. - Thanks, Giselle
No, customers have reported that the mattress does not emit any off-putting fire retardant smell, allowing for a more pleasant and immediate sleep experience.
The soft-touch damask cover gives the mattress a plush sleep surface, enhancing overall comfort and edge support. This ensures a better sleeping experience.
Yes, the mattress is designed to be simple to rotate. This feature adds to the lifetime of the mattress, promoting even wear over time.
Back sleepers are the clearest match, especially average-build sleepers who want stable, full-width support. The open-coil unit gives a broad, even resistance rather than deep body shaping.
Side sleepers may find it too firm, especially if they have a pronounced shoulder-to-hip curve. There is limited give for shoulders and hips before pressure can build.
Movement is more likely to travel across the surface than on a pocket-sprung mattress. The springs are linked, so couples with very different body weights may notice each other shifting.
It is rated 5 out of 5, so expect a very firm, direct spring feel. The tufted surface keeps the cushioning held down rather than soft and pillowy.
It uses traditional open-coil springs, not individually pocketed springs. That gives a simpler, airier and more uniform support feel, but less tailored pressure relief around the shoulders, waist and hips.
It should sleep relatively breathable because the hourglass coils leave more air space inside than dense foam. The fibre-style filling and damask cover also avoid the close, heat-hugging feel of deep memory foam.

I found the mattress very supportive having chosen the medium comfort grade, as someone who suffers quite severe back problems this is a big positive. Its very comfortable & has allowed me to get decent deep sleep. Its well made as theres no sign of slumping or dipping despite my child & dog often jumping on. The delivery went well the delivery guys being polite & respectful and didnt have any issues getting it upstairs despite my staircase being quite tight. Overall Im happy so far with my new mattresses.

We have the king-size Carty mattress and have been using this the past week. A very nice mattress. Very Comfortable and you do not feel the springs like some mattresses so this was a real plus. Overall a very good mattress that gives you a good nights sleep.

I purchased the bed frame first from Dreams as I wasn't too sure about what mattress I wished to purchase After some thought and deliberation I chose a pocket sprung mattress as I remember a relative saying they had purchased one from Dreams and was very happy with it and now so am I with mine.

Excellent service from start to finish. Tested out the bed in store and the staff member was excellent and very helpful, but we ordered online from home later as had to run for a lunch reservation. Booking delivery was easy, and the guys were extremely professional and helpful when delivering to my mum whos on her own in the house. Mattress itself is comfortable and extremely good value for money. Cant recommend enough.
