About the Silentnight Epping Miracoil Ortho Traditional Spring Mattress
Last checked
The Epping is a traditional sprung Silentnight built around the Miracoil support system, with Eco Comfort fibre above it, a damask cover and tufting to hold the surface together. It is sold as firm support, and buyer language pushes that further: very firm, sometimes extra firm, is the repeated description rather than cushioned medium-firm. This is a budget orthopaedic-style construction, not a pocket-sprung or memory-foam hybrid, so the support comes from a linked spring unit spreading load across the mattress rather than hundreds or thousands of individually moving pockets. Firmness is the main feature here. A Miracoil unit at this end of the market is fair for the price, but conservative beside the £500-plus pocket-sprung tier, where separate pocket movement usually gives better contouring and less partner disturbance. The comfort package is similarly straightforward: breathable fibre is a sensible choice for people who dislike heat-trapping foam, while the damask and tufting give the mattress a more traditional, tightly held feel. The “orthopaedic” impression is created by the firm spring tension and restrained padding, not by a deep pressure-relieving layer, so it will feel supportive to some backs and unyielding to others.
For back sleepers who actively want a hard, flat-feeling mattress, the specification lines up with the stronger praise: sleep quality improves for some, morning back niggles ease, and the temperature feel is described as comfortable rather than clammy, which fits the fibre-over-springs build. Average-weight sleepers wanting clear resistance under the hips are the natural audience, while side sleepers with sharper shoulders or lighter bodies may find the surface too severe because there is little in the description to suggest deep cushioning. Durability is where the picture becomes more mixed. A recurring complaint is that the mattress starts well but loses firmness over months, with sagging edges, loose-feeling springs, noise and renewed back or neck pain appearing in the lower-scoring feedback; one thickness complaint also challenges the advertised feel, though that is not the repeated theme. Couples should be cautious if one partner is sensitive to movement or edge dip, because a linked traditional spring system generally isolates motion less effectively than pocket springs, and the reported noise makes that more than a theoretical concern. It lands well for a budget buyer who wants a very firm, breathable, no-foam mattress for back sleeping; anyone needing plush pressure relief, quiet partner movement or stronger long-term edge support should consider stepping up to a pocket-sprung mattress with a deeper comfort layer.

Zeds proper firm and feels supportive on my back, plus it doesnt get too hot at night. Bit of a pain to rotate without handles but overall it does the job.
Comfortable and supportive, this mattress helped ease my back pain within days. Firm without being too hard, it promises a refreshing night's sleep.
I recently purchased the Silentnight Epping and couldnt be happier with my decision. From the very first night, I noticed a huge difference in the quality of my sleep. The mattress offers the perfect balance of firmness and support, making it incredibly comfortable whether youre a back, side, or stomach sleeper. The build quality is excellent – you can really tell its made with care and durable materials. I also appreciate the breathable fabric, which helps keep things cool during warmer nights. Silentnight has truly lived up to its name with this model – my nights are now genuinely silent and restful. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a high-quality bed without breaking the bank!
Very firm and comfortable mattress
I experienced back discomfort prior to using this bed. Remarkably, within two days of using it, I noticed a significant improvement in both my mood and back condition. Considering its price range, this bed offers exceptional value.
I have had a sore back on my old mattress and since I have had this one its teally helped me. Great price for such a good quality mattress.
Comfortable and price worthy I am happy with it
Ordered a king size firm mattress , mattress is firm however it appears to be just short in length of being a king size mattress . Previous mattresses have always fitted perfectly within my frame. Only into week 3 of owning it so hopefully following the mattress guidance will ensure the firmness .
The best bed we ever had . Is amazing
Amazingly comfortable and great value for money. I suffer from a bad back but not any more with this mattress. I bought the extra firm grade but it comes in other levels of firmness.
Very hard but paired with a soft silent night mattress topper creates the perfect balance of soft and firm! Its also extremely light making it easy to lift and move.
Ortho matress as described! Love it!
Great extra firm mattress great on my back has i have spinal problems and a good nights sleep
This matter was to ease my back pain, I suppose it gradually has done that over the last two weeks of owning it. Although it is rock hard and doesnt sink, it does allow for every bit of motion from my partner being felt. Also, it is recommended to rotate the mattress every two weeks but unliking my last Dreams mattress, this one doesnt have any handles.
Loving the best night's sleep on my new mattress. Firm and comfy without over heating.
When this arrived I was a bit sceptical as it seemed overly hard, however it has quickly worn in as Ive used it and I can now safely say its given me the best night sleep Ive ever had! Extremely comfortable and supportive for my back!
We wanted a very firm mattress, and this is was the best one we could find. Supports your back very well.
We purchased this mattress 4 weeks ago we already had the same on a spare bed so decided to purchase for master bedroom. So comfy excellent quality well worth the money
We purchased the mattress for our spare bed. After trying it one night we decided to swop our, more expensive, mattress for the Dreams one. A great night's sleep.
We needed an orthopedic mattress and this fitted the bill perfectly.
