About the TheraPur ActiGel® Polar 2800 Combination Mattress

Last checked

Anyone comparing this with a basic sprung mattress is really paying for a layered hybrid build: ActiGel foam, PurFibre, a knitted ActiCool cover, a pillow top and a spring system made from pocket and micro springs. The 2800 headline needs reading carefully. Because the description includes micro springs as well as pocket springs, that number should be treated as a combined spring count, not as 2800 full-height pocket springs doing all the deep support work; micro springs are there to add surface response and pressure relief, while the main pocket unit carries more of the body weight. That is still a more complex build than open-coil mattresses and many simple 1000-pocket models, especially with edge support added to increase usable width for two sleepers. The comfort package is generous in ingredient count, but conservative in natural materials: gel foam and branded fibre aim for bounce, cushioning and temperature control rather than the breathable feel of wool, cotton or latex in higher-price pocket-sprung tiers. The pillow top should make first contact feel plusher, yet the underlying spring stack and reinforced perimeter mean this is not a sink-in all-foam mattress.

ActiGel foam and the knitted cover make the cooling story credible on the spec sheet, and happier accounts describe a comfortable, cool-feeling mattress that feels deep, supportive and workable for couples, including one split super-king account where separate sides reduced disturbance. It suits back sleepers and some side sleepers who like a buoyant pillow-top over firmer spring support, with average-to-heavier bodies more likely to compress the upper layers enough to get the pressure relief the design promises. Firmness is the repeat fault line. Several low-scoring accounts describe delivered models feeling much harder than showroom samples, with shoulder, back, neck or general pain rather than the advertised plush balance. Heat is another place where the marketing and lived use do not always match; one substantial account says the cooling effect was noticeable only when lying directly on the bare mattress, then faded once a protector and normal bedding were added, while happier accounts still found it cooler than expected. There are also isolated concerns about odour and early dipping, but those are less repeated than the firmness mismatch. For sleepers who want a bouncy, deep hybrid with edge support and a cooler initial surface, this is the sensible call. For hot sleepers needing reliable temperature regulation or anyone wanting a softer pressure-relief feel, look at latex-topped pocket-sprung mattresses or a higher-tier breathable hybrid instead.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • ActiGel® layer enhances airflow for a cooler sleep environment.
  • Pocket and micro springs adjust individually, reducing partner disturbance effectively.
  • Luxurious pillow top layer provides pressure relief for sensitive areas like shoulders.
  • Super king zip option allows individual firmness preferences for each side of the bed.

Cons

  • Not suitable for those preferring a softer mattress, as it feels firmer than expected.
  • Cooling feature may not perform well for every sleeper, leading to discomfort from heat.
  • Reported sagging in the middle after a short period of use raises durability concerns.
  • Initial strong smell requires airing out, which may be unpleasant for some users.

Firm comfort support rating - feels solid and supportive

A firm comfort support rating indicates a mattress that provides a robust sleep surface, offering substantial support for the spine and pressure points. A 100 Night Comfort Guarantee allows for a trial period where the product can be tested in your own home environment to see if it meets personal comfort standards. If it doesn't meet your expectations, it can be returned for a refund or exchange, offering flexibility and assurance in purchasing decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions For The TheraPur ActiGel® Polar 2800 Combination Mattress

The questions below are the most common ones BedBoy readers ask when comparing products in this category. Contact the editorial team with a different question, quoting 131-01084 in the subject line.

I see your concern, some customers have raised issues regarding the mattress structure. While many customers have praised its supportive and comfortable design, a handful of customers have raised issues about the mattress dipping or collapsing at the sides. Product experiences can vary and are dependent on various factors such as body type, usage, and care.
The combination of the gel layer and the breathable knitted cover does seem to keep heat build-up down compared with denser foam mattresses, with many people finding they wake up less sticky in summer, though if someone sleeps very hot they will still feel warm but not as stifled or clammy as they might on a full foam set-up.
The initial odour can be quite noticeable and a bit clingy for those with a sensitive nose, and while some say it fades in a few days others have reported it hanging around for a couple of weeks even with windows open and bedding changed regularly so anyone bothered by smells might find the first stretch a bit annoying.
The feel starts off properly firm with the pocket and micro springs holding you up rather than letting you dip, but some people have mentioned the edges softening and a slight ridge forming in the middle over time so anyone with a bad back probably wants to rotate their position on it a bit rather than hugging the same spot every night.
Side sleepers who like a bit of squish under the shoulder may find it on the stiff side because the firm rating and bouncy fibres stop you sinking in deeply, so it tends to suit back and some front sleepers far better unless a topper is added to soften that first contact a touch.
The spring system copes quite well in the centre for heavier bodies with good lift and pressure relief but several reports mention the edges losing their original rigidity and a slight raised band across the middle from settling, so someone heavier who sits on the side a lot might notice that change sooner than they would like.
Yes, the cooling feature of the mattress is facilitated by the built-in ActiGel® foam and ActiCool® cover. These materials are engineered to pull the heat away from your body, providing a refreshing sensation and helping to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night. The cooling effect is reported to be efficient by some customers, but please note that experiences can vary dependant on individual preferences and ambient room temperature. Thanks, Giselle.
Based on the firmness of the mattress and feedback from various customers, it might not be the best choice for side sleepers. Its firm tension excels in providing support for back and stomach sleepers while side sleepers might find it less comfortable as they often need a mattress with a bit more sinkage to accommodate their hip and shoulder.
I’m afraid specific dimensions and weight details haven’t been provided, but typically, the size and weight of a mattress depend on its size such as single, double, queen, or king and the materials used in its construction. If you require precise information, I recommend reaching out directly to the retailer for accurate specifications.
Back sleepers are the strongest match, especially average-to-heavier people. The firm spring support should help keep the pelvis lifted and the spine better aligned.
Some side sleepers may find it too firm, particularly if they need deeper give at the shoulder and hip. It is better suited to people who prefer lift over deep pressure relief.
The reinforced edge design is one of the more practical features. It should make the sides feel steadier and help prevent the pillow top from making the perimeter feel too soft.
It has a useful mix for sharing, with pocket and micro springs to reduce movement spread and reinforced edges to make more of the width usable. If one partner wants a much softer feel, the firm baseline may not suit them.
It is a firm 5 out of 5 mattress. The pillow top, ActiGel foam and PurFibre add some cushioning, but the main feel is supportive and buoyant rather than soft or sink-in.
The cooling spec is credible, with gel foam, breathable PurFibre and an ActiCool knitted cover aimed at airflow and heat management. The pillow top may still feel more insulating than a very taut, flat surface.

Gone for the TP ActiGel Polar 2800 and its been a solid upgrade, feeling nicely supportive for sleeping on my back without getting too warm. It did have a bit of a “new mattress” smell at first, but it eased off after a good airing.

This mattress is so comfortable. I have had several spinal surgeries so I needed a good quality firm mattress. Dreams was ideal for me because I chose it via their in-store sleep match. I've had it now for about 2 weeks and my body is just about used to it. It has a nice cooling ActiGel layer which is really nice. It's nice and supportive, which I needed because I'm a little on the larger size... I highly recommend Dreams if you're looking for a good quality mattress.

Very firm bed and a very deep mattress. My husband is loving it. Im taking a while to adjust, its much firmer than Im used to and ideally would prefer some give. I do find I wake up quite achy. We have the 30-100 day guarantee which gives us piece of mind.

I have literally had a bad back for years until i got this mattress! Cannot stress enough how much this has changed my life, i wake up feeling great rather than groggy and tired. Its a firm which i was unsure of at first but its crazy how soft it feels, better than any hotel bed i stay in. If you have bad back issues, i recommend this mattress!
