About the Ashford Memory Support Mattress

Last checked

Pressure relief is the main promise of the Ashford Memory Support Mattress, rather than springy lift or a highly engineered support system. It is a medium mattress, 3 of 5, and that puts it in the safer middle of the tension scale: soft enough to let shoulders and hips settle, but not pitched as an orthopaedic or extra-firm back-support model. This is a comfort-first specification. The memory-support positioning is conservative rather than showy for the category; compared with pocket-sprung hybrids, the practical trade-off is more contouring and movement-damping, with less bounce and less obvious upward push when changing position. That tallies with the owner feedback, where the most satisfied sleepers describe a “just right” feel rather than a plush sink or rigid board. The comfort layer seems to be doing the main work at the surface, giving a softer top over a steadier base, which is an honest approach for a medium memory mattress but not the same as zoned spring support for different parts of the body. Several buyers also mention a bedding-in period, so first-night firmness should not be treated as the finished feel.

Side sleepers of average build are the clearest audience, especially those who want hip and shoulder cushioning without dropping into a very soft mattress. Side sleepers get the strongest case here. Positive reviews repeatedly connect the medium feel with fewer sore hips, easier settling and a more complete night’s sleep, and one detailed side-sleeper account at around 70kg lines up neatly with what this tension should deliver. Temperature feedback is better than the memory-foam stereotype: multiple accounts describe it as neither too hot nor too cold, which suggests the comfort layer is not trapping heat in the way cheaper all-foam mattresses sometimes do. The weaker feedback sits around mobility and liveliness. Low-scoring experiences describe difficulty moving around, a deadened feel when sitting down and a desire for more bounce; one older sleeper only became comfortable after adding toppers, so the medium label does not guarantee easy comfort for people who need extra surface softness or more responsive support. Back sleepers can use it, particularly at average body weight, but those who rely on a firmer, flatter platform for lumbar support may find the contouring less precise than a firmer pocket-sprung build. If side-sleeping pressure relief at average body weight is the priority, this works; if easier turning, stronger bounce or firmer back support comes first, a firmer pocket-sprung hybrid tier makes more sense.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Many owners describe the mattress as supportive while still feeling soft on top.
  • Recent buyers report significant improvement in sleep quality after using the mattress.
  • Users recovering from surgery find it helps maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature.
  • Side sleepers mention less discomfort in hips after switching to this mattress.

Cons

  • Some users feel the mattress lacks bounce and can feel too firm initially.
  • Several owners find it difficult to move around on the mattress due to its design.
  • Those who prefer a softer feel report needing additional toppers for comfort.
  • Buyers noted a thudding sound when sitting down, indicating potential structural issues.

It's nice but could be better. It's a bit too firm for my liking and not as soft offering enough support.

Was not comfortable for me on its own. But I bought two toppers. One sheep's wool style and one memory foam an am now comfortable and warm. Would recommend for a younger person and for someone in their 80s if they were able to use a topper with it.

I'm finding the Ashford Memory Support Mattress extremely comfortable. I'd researched a lot of other brands on different company websites and read the reviews before purchasing and so glad I chose this one. Like a couple of other reviewers, I also manage pain, though specifically in my neck and upper spine. It is neither too soft or too firm, just right for me. Benson's had done me proud with a previous mattress and I'm so glad I put my trust in them again as I haven't been disappointed. A Huge Thanks Bensons!

Bensons did warn that it might take a while to get used to a new mattress but this has been comfortable from day one. It is of medium firmness so does give support but with a softer topping. Before the new mattress I sometimes woke up with sore hips but not with the new one. (For reference I sleep on my side and weigh about 70kg.)
