About the Slumberland Orleans Strutted Headboard

Last checked

A strutted upholstered board is the Orleans’ whole proposition: a padded decorative face fixed to the bed base by vertical struts, rather than a floor-standing panel carrying its own weight to the floor. It is a decorative board first. The look people respond to is smart, plush and colour-led, with the upholstery doing the work that timber grain, metal rails or carved detailing would do on more traditional headboards. Several positives cluster around how easily it sits with existing wallpaper, bedding and room schemes, and one repeated practical note is that it does not feel overly bulky, so it should suit rooms where a thick upholstered slab would crowd the bed end. For this construction class, the spec is conservative: struts are the common, cost-aware way to add a soft headboard to a divan base, while floor-standing upholstered boards in the next tier usually bring more mass, more wall-like presence and better resistance when leaned on. The soft face is the point of comfort here, not structural heft, so the Orleans reads as a tidy upholstered finish for a made-up bed rather than a statement wingback or deep hotel panel.

Decor-led buyers who want a warmer-looking alternative to metal or plain timber are the natural audience, particularly when the bed base already accepts a standard bolt-on strut headboard. Praise tends to centre on the colour, the soft covering and the way the board makes a bedroom feel more finished; the comments about comfort when resting a head against it match the upholstered, padded construction rather than promising lounge-chair support. The wobble is the main caveat. A recurring complaint is movement once fitted, with the board leaning back under pillows or feeling unstable against the base, and criticism specifically points to the struts lacking the rigidity expected for regular sitting-up use; one poor-finish experience appears, but finish feedback overall is more positive than negative. This suits a divan bedroom where appearance, softness and a slim profile matter more than backrest firmness. For nightly reading, heavy pillow pressure or a fixed boutique-hotel feel, sturdier support comes from a floor-standing upholstered headboard, or from a pricier build with thicker timber struts and stronger base fixings.

Specifications

Manufacturer specifications without the jargon, easy to scan and compare.

Proudly handcrafted in the UK

Workshop upholstery can mean tighter fabric corners and small differences between pieces. Because it isn't proof of stronger timber or better fixings, check the backing, brackets and upholstery care needs before assuming it will outlast cheaper options.

8-year guarantee

A lengthy guarantee period like this often indicates a high-quality product. Manufacturers are unlikely to offer such a long guarantee unless they have confidence in the longevity and durability of their product.

Available in 19 colours

Fabric shade changes how strongly the panel shows in the room, because pale tones recede while darker ones draw the eye behind your pillows. Screens can mislead, though, and swatches are worth checking.

Sumptuously padded for extra comfort

Foam beneath the fabric cushions your shoulders when you read in bed, giving the board a softer feel than a plain timber or metal panel. Thicker upholstery can look bulkier in a tight alcove.

Luxury upholstered headboard

Padding behind the fabric cushions the wall end of the bed, making sitting up to read or watch television easier on your shoulders. Fabric can mark, and cleaning needs more care.

Choice of Small Single/Single/Small Double/Double/King/Super King

Matching the headboard width to the bed keeps the fixing points aligned, helping the back panel sit square behind the pillows. Order the wrong size and the struts won't line up.

Modern linear design

Straight stitched panels draw the eye along the bed end, giving your pillows a flatter, neater backdrop than buttoned detailing. Dust can settle in the seams.

Excellent quality. Well finished and look very luxurious. We were also supplied with a piece of cleaning material which works very well. Very pleased with the headboard and would go back if others are required

The upholstery is very nice and exactly the colour we wanted, however the struts are weak, they should be made from a more rigid hardwood and be thicker to stop the headboard wobbling.

Love the colour and material of this headboard, the sample in store did not do it justice. However its very wobbly now fitted on the base and leans back with even pillows against it, Benson staff have said this is the norm with this style of headboard l am not sure !

I love this headboard! My previous one was metal and I sometimes thought it looked like a hospital bed. This one's smart, plush and blends in nicely with my wallpaper!! It's also higher than my previous one and so hides a stubborn stain wallpaper!!
