About the Flaxby Oxtons Guild Pocket Sprung Mattress

Last checked

Cortec™ pocket springing and layers of micro springs make the Flaxby Oxtons Guild a firmly traditional mattress rather than a foam-led hybrid, with British wool and hemp doing the surface-comfort work instead of memory foam. It is firm, 5 of 5. The feel is deliberately upright. A spring-and-natural-fibre build like this is fair for the price tier when set against mass-market memory-foam hybrids: the wool and hemp are a more breathable, more unusual comfort mix, while the glue-free recyclable spring unit and absence of FR chemical treatment in that unit give it a clearer sustainability angle than most standard pocket-sprung mattresses. The support story is still tension-led rather than deeply pressure-relieving, so the mattress holds the body high rather than letting shoulders and hips drop into a slow, cushioned cradle. Traditional tufting is doing a real job here, locking the loose natural fillings in place, but it also reinforces the tauter surface character; this is not the plush, pillow-top version of natural comfort. Two rows of side stitching are a sensible durability detail, especially on a mattress that relies on natural upholstery layers rather than a thick foam slab to create shape.

That firm, tufted spring build is best matched to back sleepers and some front sleepers who want their pelvis held level, and the strongest praise clusters around improved sleep quality, reduced back ache and a feeling of proper support after moving away from sinkier memory-foam mattresses. The wool and hemp also suit warmer sleepers better than dense foam, because the comfort layer is built around breathable fibres rather than heat-holding viscoelastic material; couples should expect a livelier response than all-foam, although the pocketed spring construction should localise movement better than an open-coil mattress. It needs an adjustment period. The repeated warning is that the firmness can feel harsher at home than expected and may not relax much with use, with side sleepers in particular needing a thick topper to give the shoulder and hip enough give; one complaint about a spring pressing into the shoulder is more isolated, but it fits the wider pressure-relief concern. There is also some grumbling around shape or fit on the bed frame, including sheets and protectors being awkward when the mattress does not sit as neatly as expected. It lands well for committed back sleepers wanting a natural-fibre, spring-led mattress with a held-up feel; side sleepers with curvier hips or sensitive shoulders belong in a plusher pocket-sprung or pillow-top tier.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Many owners note improved back support, reporting less pain after sleeping on it.
  • Customers appreciate the temperature regulation from the British wool and hemp layers.
  • Buyers find the mattress holds its shape well, even with regular use.
  • Recent reviews highlight easy movement on the mattress surface without sinking.

Cons

  • Several owners describe the mattress as excessively firm, leading to discomfort during sleep.
  • A few customers mention the size being smaller than expected for their bed frame.
  • Impressions of uneven edges and difficulty in keeping the mattress protector in place are common.
  • Owners indicate that a topper may be necessary for side sleepers to enhance comfort.

This matress is absolutely wonderful and it is the absolute perfect match for anyone , its comfort is over the limit and you wouldnt want anything else , it is just perect. The team at dreams will make it according to your preferences and they can even make the matress in different ways , either soft on one one side and harder on the other , or the whole matress soft of hard , which gives you a wider range of options of what your preferences are , i would absolutely recommend this wonderful and amazing matress to anyone that has any back , neck or leg problems , it will solve them

Well made, high quality, no regrets spending a little extra for this mattress. As with any mattress it needs some breaking in and getting used to but already it is paying dividends and no more back ache. Love that this brand is UK made using natural materials, cant recommend enough

After trying several mattresses at Dreams, on top of their bed technology, we shortlisted this mattress for its firm and yet exceptionally comfortable nature. On top of that, the locally sourced wool and sustainability of the build added to the value. I have slight back pain and since sleeping on this mattress (firm), it has diminished quite a bit. The sales process was fantastic with Mark from Portrack Lane proving exceptional service and making our experience of Dreams fantastic as a whole. We felt really confident of our purchase after visiting.
