About the Flaxby Masters Guild 14950 Pocket Sprung Mattress

Last checked

The Flaxby Masters Guild 14950 is a deep, natural-filled pocket-sprung mattress with a pillow top, set up in the soft, 1 of 5 comfort grade. Soft means real sink should be expected. The construction is more complex than a standard pocket-sprung mattress: Cortec springs form the recyclable, glue-free base, with DNAir and Posturfil micro-spring layers adding surface response rather than behaving like thousands of full-height support springs. That distinction matters because the 14,950-style headline count is a premium stacked-spring approach, not a direct comparison with the 1,000 to 2,000 full-size pockets common in the mid-market. Natural fillings are the generous part of the build; British wool, hemp, flax, cotton and mohair sit well above the polyester-wadding comfort packs found on many cheaper pocket-sprung and memory-foam hybrid mattresses. The pillow top gives extra depth and a more cushioned first contact, while traditional tufting and three rows of side stitching are old-school durability choices aimed at controlling the layers rather than just making the surface look plush. The natural-fibre spec is credible luxury, but the support remains spring-led and tension-led, so it will not mould in the slow, enveloping way associated with all-foam or Tempur-style mattresses.

Side sleeping is where the soft version has the clearest logic: lower-BMI sleepers and hourglass shapes normally need enough give at the shoulder and hip for the spine to stay level, and the layered micro springs plus pillow top are designed to create that contour without relying on foam. Praise clusters around comfort, better sleep and fewer morning aches, with the natural, traditional feel winning over some people who disliked the sensation of memory foam. First-week firmness is the big contradiction. Despite the soft label, a recurring complaint is that it can arrive feeling hard, with some experiences describing back pain rather than relief; longer feedback also points to a bedding-in period of roughly 6-8 weeks, and one manufacturer expectation mentioned by an unhappy buyer stretched towards 12 weeks. The mattress is heavy to rotate. The deep pillow top also creates practical niggles: fitted sheets can be tight, the usable edge can feel slightly reduced, and complaints about collapse or pillow-top compression are serious enough to treat durability as a watch-point rather than assuming luxury equals long-term consistency. It suits lighter side sleepers who are patient with a natural pocket-sprung mattress softening into use, especially where a split tension helps a couple with different preferences. Heavier back or front sleepers, or anyone needing softness from night one, should consider a firmer pocket-sprung build, a non-pillow-top design, or a higher-support hybrid category with stronger edge definition.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Owners appreciate the dual firmness options that cater to different preferences.
  • Buyers find the temperature regulation effective, enhancing sleep quality.
  • Recent purchasers report significant improvements in sleep quality and reduction in soreness.
  • Several customers mention the substantial pillow top providing a plush, supportive surface.

Cons

  • Some customers find the mattress much firmer than expected despite selecting the soft option.
  • Numerous reviewers experience back pain, indicating inadequate support for certain sleeper profiles.
  • A few owners report difficulty in rotation due to the mattress's heavy weight.
  • Some buyers note a lengthy break-in period before achieving desired comfort levels.

Went for this mattress and it feels really comfy with a nice soft top, and my back doesnt ache as much in the morning. It did feel a bit firm for the first few nights but it settled in after a week or so.

We bought the back to nature super king as we always buy a quality bed and this seemed to be a good choice, then a few weeks before delivery we where informed that they had redesigned the mattress and had to wait an extra eight weeks. One word of notice these are the heaviest mattress I have ever come across and you need to sting people to move it.

Ultimate comfort. It took a few nights to get used to my new bed and its the best thing since sliced bread! Extremely comfortable, supportive and luxurious. Its quite deep so had to buy some extra deep fitted sheets. My only concern is how it will feel in the summer as its quite a warm bed.

We chose the medium, it is comfortable for us. The mattress is heavy making rotation more awkward than our previous one, not something we had thought about. The pillow top makes it deep our fitted sheets only just manage to fit. It also moves the edge of the usable mattress in slightly so it's not quite as big as a normal mattress.

Our 1st night on this mattress was not a good night, we both got up in pain. I was worried, as i paid a lot of money for it and had already got rid of my old one. We were both pleasantly surprised with our second night, it was so much better and no pain next day, for either of us. We are 2 weeks down the line now, still getting used to our new mattress but it is now a pleasure to get into bed. I find buying the right mattress very hard and am pleased there is 100 night returns guarantee. I'm sure i can safely say, it wont be going back

I'm getting round to heaping praise on this great new mattress ... but I'm sleeping on it.

I invested in this mattress along with the sleepmotion 800i frame to combat insomnia, and I now rarely struggle to fall asleep. This mattress in the zero gravity mode is pure bliss. The worst thing about this mattress is that is has ruined hotel stays for me, I no longer enjoy sleeping in a 5* suite, as this mattress means my bed is so much comfier! Bought the super king size and soft. One genuine annoyance is that it was a couple months late to be delivered, which having just moved to an unfurnished house was a huge inconvenience. I do think considering the price of the mattress, the manufacturer should have offered some free pillows or a duvet etc. For the delay.

At last a comfortable night's sleep. Warm, soft and cosy. Michael provided a professional sales cycle, provided relevant information, but gave us space to consider our choices. Mattress is substantial, the team were great in getting it up the stairs.

We bought this bed a few months ago I still have not had really comfortable nights sleep because the buttons on the topper seem to have sort plastic going thru them which keep sticking into my hips all the time which are very uncomfortable I should have gone back to store but it closed down to weeks after we bought our bed.
