About the Millbrook Wool Ortho 1000 Pocket Mattress

Last checked

Firm back-care is the point here, pairing a 24cm, double-sided pocket-sprung body with wool, cotton and traditional tufting rather than a sink-in foam pillowtop. This is traditional support, not sink-in cushioning. The 1000 pocket spring count is honest but conservative for a serious orthopaedic mattress; higher-spec pocket-sprung builds often add zoned units, mini-springs or deeper comfort layers, while this relies on firm tension, individual spring response and natural padding to do the work. Compared with open-coil mattresses, those separate pockets should cope better with different pressure points and reduce partner disturbance, but the support is still uniform rather than profile-mapped. The wool and cotton are the stronger part of the spec: natural fillings at this level give a drier, more responsive surface than many foam-heavy hybrids, and the air vents support that breathable, traditional build. Tufting keeps the fillings held down, so the surface can feel flatter and tauter than a quilted mattress. Edge support and two rows of side stitching are meaningful here, because firmer pocket beds can otherwise soften at the perimeter over time. The care story is practical but not effortless: double-sided construction is good for longevity, yet a 45kg double, 50kg king and 60kg superking still need two capable people despite the handles.

Wool, cotton and a firm spring unit make most sense for back sleepers and people who want a held-up feel rather than pressure-melting softness. The firmer feel divides sleepers. Happier accounts repeatedly describe strong support, good finish and relief from morning aches, with several noting that it feels firm without becoming board-like after a short adjustment period; the reinforced edge also matches the praise around keeping its shape. Temperature feedback is broadly in line with the materials, because wool and cotton tend to manage moisture better than memory foam, although this should be read as breathable rather than actively cooling. Recurring low-score complaints centre on comfort: poor experiences describe lumpiness, an unforgiving surface and back pain, so the orthopaedic label should not be read as a guaranteed answer for every sore back. One detailed complaint also mentions a persistent smell, but that sits against other accounts saying there was little odour, so the stronger negative signal is feel rather than off-gassing. Couples with similar firmness preferences are better served than mixed-comfort pairs, because the pocket springs and edge build help with movement and usable width, while a lighter side sleeper may still find the shoulder and hip cushioning too shallow. If you're a back sleeper wanting a firm, natural-fibre pocket mattress, this works. If you're a side sleeper wanting deep cushioning or very sensitive to unevenness, a softer pocket-sprung mattress or pressure-relieving hybrid makes more sense.

Specifications

Manufacturer specifications without the jargon, easy to scan and compare.

Double-sided

Turnable mattresses are ones which have the soft comfort layer fillings on both the top and bottom of the mattress. This means that you can turn the mattress to help prolong the lifespan of the mattress while also helping with even settlement over time. We generally prefer turnable double sided mattresses over single sided mattresses because they typically last longer and so represent a different value for money.

24cm deep

Featuring a substantial depth of 24cm, this mattress provides ample cushioning and support, catering to varying sleep preferences with its luxuriously cozy yet supportive feel. The enhanced depth also suggests a higher level of material build, implying improved durability and longevity, encouraging an extended mattress lifespan that's a beneficial investment for the long run.

Pocket Springs

Furnished with a generous count of pocket springs, this mattress offers superior reinforcement for your body while sleeping, ensuring each segment receives individualised support. This design brilliantly alleviates pressure points and enhances comfort, without negating the overall mattress durability, guaranteeing you a restful night for years to come.

10 Year Warranty

A 10-year warranty essentially serves as a long-term promise of quality, guaranteeing that the item is free from any manufacturing defects and will perform as expected for a decade. If any issues arise during this period, they'll be rectified at no extra cost, assuring you of a hassle-free sleep experience for years to come.

Approved by the National Bed Federation

The independent seal of approval from the National Bed Federation assures meticulous standards of manufacturing. With a rigorous assessment of quality, durability and safety, such an endorsement means you're getting a product that meets top-class industry standards, contributing to more sound and relaxed slumbers.

Cotton

A mattress comprising a high quantity of cotton often results in a naturally breathable and moisture-wicking surface that deters mites and allergens. However, on the flipside, these properties may not be sufficient for individuals requiring pronounced pressure relief, given the firmness attributed by cotton.

Wool

With the inclusion of wool in its design, you're likely to experience enhanced breathability, promoting a cooler sleeping environment. Moreover, the 1000 pocket springs provide exceptional support, conforming to curves and weight distribution, to alleviate pressure points and ensure a restful night's sleep.

Orthopaedic Support

This king-size sanctuary of comfort grants sterilised hypoallergenic filling that ensures sleep is not disrupted by common allergens. Furthermore, an impressive tally of 2000 individually nestled springs provides the spine with correct alignment, tackling backaches and promoting a healthy sleeping posture.

Fire Resistant

Ensuring safety during your peaceful slumber, fire resistance is a crucial feature that reduces the risk posed by potential accidents involving flammable materials. Furthermore, it demonstrates the manufacturer's commitment to adhere to strict safety standards, prioritizing your well-being over all else.

National Bed Federation Approved Brand

Receiving approval from the National Bed Federation indicates that the product meets specific industry standards and quality benchmarks. This approval serves as a reassurance of the product's reliability and durability, though discerning buyers may still want to consider personal comfort preferences.

Relish in the peace of mind this invaluable 60-night sleep trial offers, giving you the liberty to exchange it for another Millbrook mattress should it prove unsuitable. Reinforced mattress edge

A reinforced edge signifies a mattress feature where the borders have been fortified, adding a firmness to the perimeter. This enhancement not only provides bolstered support, but also prevents premature sagging, and in turn amplifies the durability and longevity of your sleep surface.

Firm

Firmness in a mattress indicates robust support for your spine, reducing the risk of back pain and contributing favourably to your posture. Still, it might not be suitable for those who prefer a softer surface or side sleepers, who could find such solidity uncomfortable.

Tufted

Tufting is a great feature as it helps secure the fillings inside helping to promote even settlement while ensuring all fillings remain consistent. The result of tufting is a slightly firmer feel combined with great consistently across the entire mattress.

Air Vents

Integrated air vents encourage better breathability within a mattress, promoting a cooler night's sleep. Moreover, they simultaneously assist in gently eliminating excess humidity, thus maintaining the mattress’s freshness and longevity.

Includes turning handles

Turning handles aid in the regular rotation of the mattress, thereby significantly extending its lifespan. Easy maintenance is always appreciated, and these handles streamlining the process by making rotation hassle-free and manageable.

Depth: 24cm

The depth of 24cm indicates a generous amount of materials involved, usually suggesting enhanced comfort and support. However, it might also pose a challenge to fit standard sheets and require deeper ones instead.

The Millbrook Wool Ortho 1000 Pocket Mattress features reinforced mattress edges along with two rows of side-stitching. This structure enhances the edge-to-edge support, thereby providing a larger sleeping surface and minimising the risk of roll-off. The construction is aimed at providing you with a more secure and uninterrupted sleep by preventing that roll-off sensation, even if you sleep close to the edge of the mattress.
The Millbrook Wool Ortho 1000 Pocket Mattress is double-sided and includes turning handles stitched into the mattress border. These handles have been incorporated for the very purpose of making flipping and moving the mattress as effortless as possible. Regular flipping can enhance the performance and prolong the life of your mattress, making this a useful feature. Best regards, Monika
The Millbrook Wool Ortho 1000 Pocket Mattress falls on the firmer end of the spectrum, providing orthopaedic support. This level of firmness is ideal for those who sleep on their backs or for those who have been recommended a firm mattress by a medical professional. If you are a side sleeper, you might find it a bit too firm. It would essentially depend on your comfort preference and specific requirements.
The natural Hampshire wool used in the Millbrook Wool Ortho 1000 Pocket Mattress does an excellent job of maintaining a balanced temperature. Wool is a natural insulator that can keep you warm during the chilly winter nights and cool during the hotter summer nights. It is breathable, ensuring a comfortable sleeping environment throughout the year. The air vents also facilitate enhanced air circulation throughout the mattress, preventing the build-up of moisture and making for a fresher feel. Kind regards, Gary

I wanted a firm mattress and that is what this is. Also it is the sort that you turn so it wears more evenly than the one-sided sort.

The mattress is environmentally friendly which is important to me. It is well made and a good thickness. It is comfortable although it is not as firm as I would have expected for an orthopedic firmness, therefore my score is a little lower because of this, otherwise it would have been higher.

Fast delivery, it looks and feels like a pocket sprung mattress. Not too firm or too soft. The edges seem to hold up if you sit on them however I've only had it for a month do far so I don't know if this will stand the test of time. It is comfortable, clean and Good value for money for the materials. I didn't want a memory foam mattress or one with a topper so you can't flip it and this one fitted all the criteria

Improvement Points: the edges are soft not as firm as tge centre, so you must not sit on the edges.

Very well made mattress although in the online description it says 'Complete with a beautifully designed cotton cover' but the label on the mattress clearly states 100% viscose which I found a little confusing. Some people complain about the smell but I didn't mind at all as reminds me of the countryside where I live and it soon wears off.
