About the Sealy Melbourne Ortho Extra Firm Mattress
Last checked
I'm here today to decode the intriguing Sealy Melbourne Ortho Extra Firm Mattress for you. We spent a good deal of time testing, scrutinising, and getting to know this mattress in-store, aiming to paint a perfectly accurate picture for our readers. Strap in, it's time to take a closer look.Design and Construction
The very first thing that caught my attention about the Sealy Melbourne Ortho Extra Firm Mattress is its luxurious Belgian Damask cover. Silky to the touch and oozing elegance, it graces this mattress with a touch of regal charm. Yet, it's not all about good looks. This fabric hails from Belgium, known for its breathability and durability, offering users the promise of a sound sleep under a cover that'll withstand the test of time.
Next, we come to the heart of this mattress, the PostureTech Core Support spring system. This deep-down, pressure-relieving system employs a clever strategy, gradually getting firmer with increasing pressure, ensuring your body is well-supported where it's needed the most. Hinged directly to the spring unit, this Sealy Melbourne Ortho Extra Firm Mattress is a great choice for those in need of firm support during slumber.
Complementary Layers and Features
The mattress introduces us to an interesting assembly of layers beneath its royal cover. In the lumbar region of the mattress, the presence of a central zoning PowerPack grabbed our attention, promising additional support to our lower backs—a crucial factor for long-term mattress satisfaction and comfort. Thanks to this feature, not only is the mattress's lifespan extended, but it also works as a shock absorber, tailored to maintain the mattress firmness while providing cushioned support.
Another feature we loved during our in-store testing was the EdgeGuard technology. With this in place, you get a firm edge that significantly extends your sleeping area. For those who, like me, love to sprawl on their bed, you'll appreciate that you can settle to the very edge of this mattress without worrying about rolling off. Now that's a considerable advantage for couples vying for more bed space!
Environmentally-Friendly and Allergen-Free
We all know the importance of sustainable choices these days and this mattress checks that box as well. The Sealy Melbourne Ortho Extra Firm Mattress features ReNew Fibres, a highly durable eco-fibre that boosts airflow and breathability, made from an impressive 76% recycled PET plastics.
Another commendable feature of this mattress is the ProShield® fabric treatment, endorsed by Allergy UK, designed to ward off allergens for an uninterrupted and truly refreshing sleep. Considering the increasing prevalence of allergies, this trait certainly puts this mattress a point up in our books.
Comfort Levels and Practicality
Now we reach the part everybody's curious about — how comfortable is this mattress? As a mattress expert, I’d say it's pretty darn good in its league. With an extra firm comfort rating, this mattress is ideally suited to back and stomach sleepers. For side sleepers or those with an hourglass figure who require additional sinkage in the hip and shoulder areas, this may not be the best choice. However, for exclusively back sleepers, this mattress could very well ring the bell.
One of our favourite things about the Sealy Melbourne Ortho Extra Firm Mattress is its manageable weight, which makes turning and rotating the mattress easy and straightforward.
A Pinch of Salt
As much as I appreciate the ergonomics and design of this mattress, there's one area it may not excel in - keeping cool during warmer nights. While the Smartex® fibres do offer regulation of body temperature to keep you cool and dry, real-world reviews indicate that this might not be sufficient during exceptionally hot summer nights.
Additionally, in comparison with some of the mattresses I've reviewed, the 27cm depth of this mattress might not suit everyone's taste. However, this feature ensures neat alignment with your bed base and with the supplied side handles, manoeuvrability is pretty seamless.
From the Customers' Perspective
Most customers expressed their satisfaction with this product in their reviews. From improved lower back conditions, undisturbed sleep, to easy maintenance – the compliments were aplenty. However, some critiques included heat-related concerns reminiscent of our own observations and a not-so-favourable comparison to another extra firm mattress. It would seem that, while this mattress makes a great impression, it might still fall behind when measured against some other top-tier mattresses.
In conclusion, the Sealy Melbourne Ortho Extra Firm Mattress brings a lot to the table. An extra firm mattress with a host of smart features and a keen focus on sustainability, it could save you a lot of tossing and turning at night. However, it may not be the knight in shining armour for everyone, especially those living in warmer climates or favouring softer comfort levels. But for back sleepers who crave the stability of an extra firm mattress, this could be a match made in heaven. After all, as Goldilocks would say, you need to find what’s “just right” for you. Please remember that our testing was conducted in-store and did not feature an at-home trial. Different experiences may vary, so it's always wise to give a mattress a personal test before bringing it into your sacred sleep space.Pros and Cons

The firmness takes a while to get used to, but can definitely tell it's built to last. Not as comfy though, could really do with a softer top layer.
I have a curvature of the spine and in constant pain every day. We purchased this mattress three weeks ago and even after just 3 nights sleep my back has been so much better at night. It has helped me sleep every night without waking. The support this mattress gives is amazing. Best mattress I've ever had in my life and I am 48. So happy with this mattress. Delivery was great and the delivery men were helpful and friendly. Best buy ever.
