About the Braunton Memory Mattress

Last checked

The Braunton Memory Mattress is defined more by feel than by a long disclosed construction sheet: its practical headline is a mattress rated soft, 1 of 5 on the firmness scale, with a memory-foam comfort brief. Its main promise is pressure relief. A rating this low is unusual in a market crowded with medium-firm boxed foams and firmer pocket-sprung mattresses, and it makes the Braunton a more specialist proposition than a general-purpose family mattress. The honest read is that softness is doing the heavy lifting here: it aims to let shoulders, hips and curved body shapes sink in before pressure builds, rather than creating the flatter, braced feel associated with orthopaedic or higher-tension pocket-sprung builds. That is useful for lighter side sleepers and hourglass figures, but it also narrows the audience, because a very soft mattress can feel short on push-back for anyone who needs the bed to hold the pelvis high. The memory element should give a more contouring, slower-response surface than traditional open-coil mattresses, although the repeated comments about thinness suggest this is not a deep, enveloping memory-foam build in the £500-plus tier.

The soft specification points most clearly towards side sleepers with a lower-than-average BMI, especially those who usually find firmer mattresses harsh around the shoulder and hip. Sleep comfort is the strongest positive theme: praise repeatedly centres on easy settling, a relaxed surface feel and noticeably better nights, with support mentioned by those who like the balance rather than want a marshmallow-soft sink. Thinness is the repeated practical gripe. Several low-scoring experiences challenge the headline softness, describing the mattress as closer to the soft side of medium, too shallow on the bed base, or insufficiently cushioned over the support underneath; one response even found it springy rather than plush, so the customer signal is less uniformly soft than the rating implies. For very pressure-sensitive side sleepers, a thin comfort layer can leave the hip or shoulder meeting the firmer part of the mattress sooner than expected, and it also explains the value concern from a purchaser who felt the feel did not quite justify a roughly £300 spend. If the sleeper is lighter, side-sleeping and wants gentle pressure relief without a tall mattress profile, this works. If the priority is a clearly plush, thicker-feeling mattress with deeper cushioning, the £500-plus memory-foam or pocket-sprung pillow-top tier makes more sense.

The mattress is soft which seems to be a miracle these days to buy as everyone seems to buy firm but it is terrible for me as a side sleeper lighter person, as firm ones really affect my pressure points. It would benefit from the memory foam being a little bit thicker and it is a little thin making my bed a bit low. I would say it's not really worth the £300 I paid but overall I am happy with it.

4 stars is reflective of the firmness of the mattress in that it is said to be 'soft', but to me it borders on a soft side of medium, and therefore not as I would like it, or expected. Yes, customers are advised one will settle with a new mattress, and I hope that is the case. Some stiffness in my back is being experienced each morning. I did send a message to customer services with all identifying information from the mattress lable asking them to please confirm I was definitely given a 'soft' mattress, but disappointingly no reply. Earlier communication was speedy and polite, so maybe my question was not well received. Looking to try a mattress topper to aid comfort.
