About the Hip Hop Tallboy Chest of Drawers

Last checked

Where floor width is tight but a matching storage piece is wanted, the Hip Hop Tallboy Chest of Drawers is the upright member of Bensons for Beds’ Hip Hop bedroom-furniture range, intended to sit with the bed and bedside pieces rather than act as a stand-alone storage workhorse. The look is deliberately clean. The repeated references to five drawers, recessed handles and rounded edges point to a slim, modern chest with a handleless front, aimed more at keeping a room visually tidy than at maximising deep folded-clothes capacity. Storage is modest, not generous. Compared with wider three- or four-drawer bedroom chests, a five-drawer tallboy saves floor space but divides capacity into narrower compartments, which is a common compromise in compact bedroom furniture rather than a premium storage solution. Assembly is part of ownership here. Positive reviews describe the build as easy and the finished piece as good-looking, particularly when it is paired with other Hip Hop items, although lower-scoring feedback flags scratch-prone surfaces during assembly and one account describes warped locking screws. The practical call is that the styling is doing more of the work than the cabinet construction: sleek, range-matched and tidy, but not a premium-feeling build in the £400-plus furniture tier.

Recessed handles and rounded edges give the chest a clean contemporary register, and that is where the stronger feedback lands: several households like the way it completes a bedroom set, with recent praise centred on the room looking more pulled together once the furniture was in place. It suits lighter storage loads best. Children’s clothes, guest-room spares, underwear, nightwear and smaller folded items are the better match, and the positive comments about it fitting a space make sense for a tallboy format that uses height instead of width. Capacity is the weak point. Multiple accounts describe the drawers as too small for teenage or adult clothing, with bulky hoodies, fleeces and larger folded garments quickly swallowing the available space, so the “tallboy” format should not be read as high-capacity adult storage. Quality reservations also repeat: the drawer action is described as clunky in one detailed comparison, the surface can scratch during assembly, and recent feedback mentions arrival damage, a wood smell affecting clothes and a sense that the finish does not justify the price beside the matching bed or bedside unit. For a child’s room, guest bedroom or tightly planned Hip Hop set, this is the right call. For main-bedroom adult storage or heavier daily use, look at a wider, deeper chest in the next furniture price tier instead.

Quality was not as good as first thought but looks stylish enough. Damaged on arrival. We reported this in a previous survey but typically had no response. Drawer "recessed handles" were ok for the sleek look but we preferred to purchase additional pull-handles from another supplier and fitted them instead. We also purchased drawer liners to prevent the wood smell from tainting any clothes.

Reasonable quality for the price. The colour is different to the original wardrobe we bought. Having said that we are satisfied with the product.

A lovely peice of furniture, it matches the hip hop bed perfectly. Looks classy with plenty of space in the drawers. A bit fiddley to put together but well worth the effort.

Shorter than expected and expensive for what you get. We had an IKEA malm bedside cabinet before and it was tall, spacious and the drawers glided in and out easily. These feel clunky and not much drawer space. I like the rounded edges though and they do match the hip hop bedframe well.

arrives un constructed and you will need screwdrivers but as flat pack furniture goes - it's not too difficult to assemble! The runners are already on the drawers etc so its only the shell and drawers to build. Took 2 people nearly an hour though!
