About the Pure Embrace Pillowtop Mattress

Last checked

A 3,750-spring king-size build puts the Pure Embrace well above the conventional 1,000-pocket mattress class, but the count needs reading properly: the support comes from the Advanced Cortec Quad pocket-spring unit, while the 1,000 Posturfil springs and 2,000 micro springs are there to refine pressure relief nearer the surface. That matters. Micro springs are not a substitute for deeper steel support, yet in a 28cm pillowtop mattress they make practical sense because they let the top section compress more closely around shoulders, hips and knees without relying on synthetic foam. The wool, hemp and flax filling package is generous for a pocket-sprung pillowtop, and unusual against the memory-foam hybrid tier, where cooling claims often come from gel foams rather than genuinely breathable fibres. The wool-and-viscose cover, hand-tufting and two rows of side stitching point to a traditional, labour-heavy build rather than a boxed-mattress recipe; the side stitching is the more useful detail, because it should help the edges feel less collapsible when sitting or sleeping near the border. It is no-turn, so the pillowtop stays uppermost, but regular rotation still matters because natural fillings settle under body weight and the maker openly treats some indentation as normal.

The clearest fit is for sleepers who want a cushioned top but still need a controlled, spring-led feel underneath, especially in the firm tension that several owners describe as supportive rather than squashy. Couples get a sensible spec on paper: independent pocket springs should limit partner disturbance better than open-coil mattresses, and the dual-tension option in king and super king sizes is useful where body weights or firmness preferences differ. Buyers repeatedly praise the comfort and support, with several describing better, less interrupted sleep, and one recent owner specifically connects the natural filling package with staying cooler through the night. The smell is the risk. A recurring complaint is a strong farmyard-style odour that lasted for weeks rather than clearing after airing, which directly clashes with the care guidance suggesting a short four-hour airing period; for odour-sensitive households, the customer evidence is more important than the brochure reassurance. One lower-rated owner also found the mattress too hard and heavy to live with, so lighter side sleepers or anyone expecting a plush hotel sink may be better steered towards a softer pillowtop or a foam-topped hybrid. Best suited to buyers who value natural fibres, firm spring support and edge structure; poor match for anyone sensitive to wool or farm-like smells, or for sleepers wanting a lighter, softer mattress in the mainstream boxed-mattress tier.

Pros and Cons

Cons

  • Some buyers report a strong, unpleasant smell that lingers for weeks.
  • Perceived firmness may be too high for those preferring a softer mattress.
  • Heavy weight can make moving or adjusting the mattress challenging.
  • Requires airing before use to eliminate initial odours, which can be inconvenient.

Specifications

Manufacturer specifications without the jargon, easy to scan and compare.

Mattress care: Air for 4 hours before using to remove any odour. Allow at least 4 hours for springs to settle and for mattress to attain its full size. Indentations caused by settlement of fillings or body weight are normal and are not considered defects. If used on a slatted bed frame, the space between slats must be no wider than 7.5 cm. Spaces wider than this may cause excess dipping of the mattress and invalidate the guarantee. Always use a mattress protector. Rotate regularly.

Freshly unpacked springs and fillings need open air, a mattress protector and regular rotation, because trapped odour, compression and body-weight hollows are easier to control early. Slats over 7.5 cm apart may lead to excess dipping.

Responsibly sourced and fully traceable British wool.

Wool fibres in the comfort layers absorb moisture vapour and trap small pockets of air, giving the surface a drier feel on warm nights and a less chilly first touch. Paperwork doesn't tell you how soft the surface will feel.

Features the award-winning Advanced CortecTM Quad pocket spring system.

Rows of fabric-wrapped coils flex separately under you, giving steadier support than a joined spring unit and limiting the ripple from a partner turning over. Edges may feel less secure without stronger perimeter support.

Springs work together to provide targeted pressure relief and plush-cushioned comfort.

Coil rows dip in small sections beneath heavier areas, while neighbouring sections stay higher, making the surface seem less slab-like through the night. That softness may not suit anyone after a firmer, flatter surface.

Painstakingly handcrafted in Yorkshire.

Human assembly means layers, borders and stitching are put together at close range, giving you seams and edges that look individually finished. Small variations can happen, while comfort depends on the fillings.

Made exclusively for Furniture Village.

Being exclusive to Furniture Village means you'll find this mattress only in their stores. This unique availability may limit price comparisons, yet offers a distinct in-store experience for potential buyers.

Mattress type: Pocket spring.

Individually wrapped coils compress one by one under weight, because separate movement can reduce roll-together and make a partner's turning less obvious. Edge support can feel weaker without a firmer border.

Requires turning: No.

Single-sided layers keep the cushioned surface on top, sparing you heavy flipping. Rotate it head to toe as the care label advises, because the upper surface takes the nightly load and can settle unevenly.

Cover: Wool and viscose blend.

Animal fibre in the cover absorbs moisture, while viscose keeps the surface smoother against your sheet, leaving the top less clammy on warm nights. Animal-fibre sensitivities call for a different cover.

This pillowtop mattress is part of the Harrison Spinks Pure collection.

No extra layer or altered spring unit is confirmed by this label. Use it as a pointer to related materials and design choices, though firmness, depth and care demands need checking on the exact model.

Pillowtop: Yes.

Extra sewn-on padding adds a softer first layer above the mattress core, creating a plusher landing before the support underneath takes over. The stitched layer can settle, and rotation may be needed.

Cushioned with the most luxurious and sustainable naturally cooling and moisture-wicking fillings.

Comfort layers near the surface give the top a softer, less clammy feel, because they can take up dampness before it pools against your skin. Hot sleepers may need a cooler room or lighter duvet.

Designed for responsive support that adapts to your body to provide optimal spinal alignment.

Springier layers give under heavier zones and rebound after you change position, leaving your spine feeling less dragged out of line. That livelier feel can disturb partners or light sleepers.

A premium pillowtop mattress, the Harrison Spinks Pure Embrace mattress cocoons you in comfort.

Quilted upper padding sits above the core layers, softening the first lie-down and letting you settle into a deeper cushioned surface. Firm support seekers may find the top layer too yielding.

Sizes: Single, small double, double, king and super king.

Mattress footprint fixes the bed surface and floor space you get. Larger options need wider frames and clearer delivery routes, while smaller ones can feel cramped for two adults overnight.

Springs: 3,750 pocket springs in king size, including high-density micro springs and Posturfil pocket springs.

Fabric-wrapped springs respond individually beneath you, letting one part of the surface dip without dragging the rest with it. Lighter sleepers may gain little from the smallest springs.

Plus 1,000 Posturfil pocket springs and a layer of 2,000 high-density micro springs.

Separate metal springs react one by one under your weight, letting one part of the surface dip without dragging the rest with it. Added metalwork may make the mattress heavier to turn.

Finished with 2 rows of hand-side stitching for edge-to-edge support.

Stitched mattress flanks tie the border fabric into the spring unit, giving you a steadier rim when lying or perching near it. That firmer rim can be less forgiving for edge sleepers.

Hemp and flax grown on the Harrison Spinks farm.

Hemp and flax fibres inside the mattress absorb and release moisture, giving the top layers a drier, plant-fibre character under your sheets. They won't cool a hot room on their own.

Hand-tufted.

Tapes pulled through the fillings lock the layers together, and you get a firmer, steadier feel across more of the surface. Those indentations can be noticeable through thin sheets.

Firmness: Available in medium and firm. King and super king sizes also available in dual tension.

Medium tension lets shoulders dip a little, while firmer support holds the hips higher for a flatter sleeping position. Separate halves can leave the centre line more noticeable.

Fillings: Wool, hemp and flax.

Fibres inside the comfort layer draw away moisture for a drier feel. Damp rooms may need regular airing, since these materials can hold onto moisture before they dry fully again.

A no-turn mattress with 3,750 springs in king size for superior support and pressure relief.

Individual coils compress separately, helping the surface follow your weight without one broad dip from edge to centre. Rotation is still needed, or wear can settle unevenly.

Depth: 28 cm.

Mattress height lifts the sleep surface away from the base, which can make a low frame easier to get out of. Deep fitted sheets are worth checking before delivery.

Fire-retardant and chemical treatment-free wool-blend mattress cover is woven in-house.

Wool in the cover can char under flame, giving the surface a drier, less plasticky touch beneath a sheet. Over time, wool can pill or compress and needs airing.

Amazing mattress. Extremely comfortable and supportive. Also keeps you cool too, so easier to maintain temperature for comfort remaining all night long. The only negative is the smell… it was explained throughout the sales process how Harrison Spinks mattresses are hand made on the farm the materials are sourced from and the smell would go after airing, but it does last quite a number of weeks, despite it being left in a ventilated room unused for a week beforehand. The whole Furniture Village experience was great, from entering store to delivery. Cannot fault it.

Our new king size mattress was delivered three weeks ago and we are delighted with the level of comfort and support provided. We decided to order the firmer tension and this provides great support while the pillow top is very comfortable. The mattress is very well made from natural materials and we look forward to a good nights sleep for years to come. Highly recommended.

Lovely well made mattress. Excellent side wall support. We have for a couple of weeks now & the smell of the sheep wool is now subsiding. I have a bad back & find this mattress very supportive. Its much harder & not as comfortable as the one in the shop but hopefully will get softer in time. Something we failed to consider.

Well made mattress. Not sure about the topping. Starting to become a bit uneven already despite turning it weekly which I would like to add is very heavy.

Love our new mattress. It's so supportive and comfy. Glad we chose the medium firmness as we'd normally go for firmness, but this particular make seems to be a bit firmer so medium is perfect. Feels luxurious.
