About the Sealy Eaglesfield Memory Ortho Plus Mattress

Last checked

The Sealy Eaglesfield Memory Ortho Plus is a 25cm, single-sided orthopaedic mattress built around Sealy’s PostureTech Core Support spring system, with a damask cover, memory-foam comfort layer, edge support and turning handles. This is an open-spring support unit rather than a pocket-sprung one, so the support is more uniform across the body and less individually responsive than the £500-plus pocket-sprung or memory-foam hybrid tier; the honest part is that Sealy leans into firmness and edge reinforcement rather than pretending this is a contour-heavy, zoned luxury build. Firmness is the main event here. The memory foam softens the surface a little, adding some moulding over shoulders, hips and lower back, but it sits on top of a firmer orthopaedic spring base, so buyers expecting a deep, slow-sinking foam feel may find the comfort layer secondary to the spring tension. At 16kg in single, 21kg in double and 27kg in king size, it is relatively manageable for rotation compared with many thicker hybrids, and the four handles matter because the mattress still needs turning head-to-toe every couple of months even though it never needs flipping. The five-year guarantee and National Bed Federation approval are solid on-tier signals, while the damask cover and tufted, firmer sleep surface keep it closer to a traditional back-care mattress than a plush boxed-foam design.

People who want a very supportive, high-feeling bed are the clearest audience, especially back sleepers and some heavier side sleepers who dislike dipping through softer foam. Buyers consistently describe the mattress as very firm, supportive and better for back discomfort, with several linking the feel to improved sleep or reduced lower-back and hip aches; that lines up with the firm spring core and relatively restrained memory-foam layer rather than contradicting the spec. Couples get a practical benefit from the Edge Guard, which should make the usable sleeping width feel steadier near the sides, although an open-spring core is not the same as pocket springs for isolating a restless partner’s movement. The recurring reservation is hardness. More than one owner found it too firm for one half of a couple, and a topper was used to make the surface more forgiving while keeping the underlying support; there is also a smaller but sharper quality-and-expectation complaint, including one low-rating buyer saying it did not feel firm enough, which sits against the wider owner pattern rather than overturning it. The memory foam may hold a little more warmth than plain fibre fillings, but the relatively traditional 25cm build and damask surface do not read like a heavily foamed heat trap. Best suited to firm-mattress buyers, back-pain-focused sleepers and those who prioritise edge stability and easy rotation; side sleepers with sensitive shoulders, lighter bodies wanting cushioning, or couples needing strong motion isolation are better served by a softer pocket-sprung mattress or a plusher memory-foam hybrid.

Specifications

Manufacturer specifications without the jargon, easy to scan and compare.

5 year guarantee

A 5 year guarantee is longer than the industry standard and gives confidence that both the supplier and retailer have confidence in the product they sell. After all, if it goes wrong through a manufacturing defect in this time, they will be the ones on the hook! Sleep soundly with the confidence that you will not be left out of pocket through this period. A win for the consumer.

Approved by the National Bed Federation

The independent seal of approval from the National Bed Federation assures meticulous standards of manufacturing. With a rigorous assessment of quality, durability and safety, such an endorsement means you're getting a product that meets top-class industry standards, contributing to more sound and relaxed slumbers.

Orthopaedic Support

This king-size sanctuary of comfort grants sterilised hypoallergenic filling that ensures sleep is not disrupted by common allergens. Furthermore, an impressive tally of 2000 individually nestled springs provides the spine with correct alignment, tackling backaches and promoting a healthy sleeping posture.

Fire Resistant

Ensuring safety during your peaceful slumber, fire resistance is a crucial feature that reduces the risk posed by potential accidents involving flammable materials. Furthermore, it demonstrates the manufacturer's commitment to adhere to strict safety standards, prioritizing your well-being over all else.

PostureTech Core Support Springs

Featuring a proprietary PostureTech Core Support Springs system, this technology ensures an equal distribution of weight across the entire sleep surface. As such, it can help promote correct spinal alignment and alleviate pressure points, thereby promoting a more restful and comfortable night's sleep.

National Bed Federation Approved Brand

Receiving approval from the National Bed Federation indicates that the product meets specific industry standards and quality benchmarks. This approval serves as a reassurance of the product's reliability and durability, though discerning buyers may still want to consider personal comfort preferences.

Memory Foam

A mattress featuring memory foam guarantees body-conforming comfort, as the material adapts to your unique shape, cradling you for personalized support. However, for individuals who tend to sleep hot, heat retention could be an issue due to the foam's dense cellular structure which traps body heat.

Reinforced mattress edge

A reinforced edge signifies a mattress feature where the borders have been fortified, adding a firmness to the perimeter. This enhancement not only provides bolstered support, but also prevents premature sagging, and in turn amplifies the durability and longevity of your sleep surface.

Firm

Firmness in a mattress indicates robust support for your spine, reducing the risk of back pain and contributing favourably to your posture. Still, it might not be suitable for those who prefer a softer surface or side sleepers, who could find such solidity uncomfortable.

25cm deep

In terms of depth, 25cm can imply a mattress that provides significant cushioning, potentially offering improved comfort and support. However, this dimension also may require deeper fitted sheets, an additional consideration for the shopper.

Includes turning handles

Turning handles aid in the regular rotation of the mattress, thereby significantly extending its lifespan. Easy maintenance is always appreciated, and these handles streamlining the process by making rotation hassle-free and manageable.

Depth: 25cm

25cm is a great middle-ground for a mattress. Thick enough to house good quality materials and components while being thin enough to fit normal sheets ensuring you do not need to upgrade your bedding unnecessarily.

Damask cover

The damask cover provides a plush, luxurious feel to your bed while still being durable and easy to clean. With a traditionally elegant design, it adds a touch of timeless aesthetic to your bedroom.

Handcrafted in the UK

Wow! If you're looking for a high-quality mattress that is handmade in the UK, then this is one to watch. This mattress is made with high-quality materials and tested to ensure quality.

Made in the UK

This 100% UK made product is the perfect choice for a home with a sense of individuality. Sleep in comfort with the knowledge that you'll waking up refreshed and ready for another day.

Single-sided

Unlike double-sided mattresses that require flipping, a single-sided mattress only needs to be rotated periodically, making maintenance easier.

Frequently Asked Questions For The Sealy Eaglesfield Memory Ortho Plus Mattress

The questions below are the most common ones BedBoy readers ask when comparing products in this category. Contact the editorial team with a different question, quoting P1455 in the subject line.

Providing an orthopaedic support, the mattress has been designed with a firmer feel, which may not offer optimal comfort for side sleepers. Back sleepers and those who require orthopaedic features are likely to benefit the most from this mattress. Thanks, Giselle
Durability in this mattress comes from a combination of its PostureTech Core Support springs for great full-body support, Edge Guard technology contributing to stability and the durable damask cover that ensures a strong exterior.
Whilst the product specifications do mention that the mattress complies with fire safety standards and is approved by the National Bed Federation, no specific details around hypoallergenic or anti-allergenic features have been included in the descriptor.
The mattress benefits from a single-sided design which, rather than requiring frequent flipping, simply needs a rotation every few months. There are also handy turning handles sewn into the mattress border to aid movement and maintenance.
Yes, this mattress features Sealy's Edge Guard technology, which increases the mattress's durability and stability. The technology supports the springs within the mattress edge, permitting comfortable and secure sitting and laying right up to the edge.
Back sleepers are the clearest fit, especially if they want strong support and dislike the pelvis dipping into softer cushioning. Average to heavier adults are likely to get the best support from the spring system.
It may feel too unforgiving for many side sleepers, especially those with broader shoulders or hips. The ortho support gives less room for those areas to settle before pressure builds.
Lighter sleepers may not press far enough into the firm springs or memory foam to get much cushioning. That can make sharper contact points feel more noticeable.
It is single-sided, so it is designed for rotation rather than flipping. The turning handles should make regular rotation easier.
It is deliberately firm, rated 5 out of 5. The spring unit gives a flatter, steadier feel, with the memory foam only softening the top slightly rather than creating deep sink.
Temperature control looks serviceable rather than cooling-focused. The damask cover should breathe reasonably well, but the memory foam sits closer to the body than fibre fillings.

This is a very firm mattress. My husband loves it but I find it too hard. However, if you put a memory foam topper on it then it is comfortable, yet firm. Either way if you are heavier or taller than average then it is a good mattress to buy. It is very light so it is easy to turn or move.
