About the Romantica Adagio Extra Firm Mattress

Last checked

The Romantica Adagio is a traditional open-coil mattress with a firm, 5 of 5 feel, soft white fibre fillings, a damask cover and a 25cm depth. Its support comes from interlaced springs rather than individually wrapped pockets, so pressure is spread across the spring unit as a whole rather than each spring reacting separately under the shoulder, hip and lower back. That is honest budget orthopaedic construction. Compared with pocket-sprung mattresses in the £400-plus tier, this is a more basic support system: the back-care effect is being created by high spring tension, compressed polyester and hand tufting, not by zoned springs, memory foam or latex comfort layers. The comfort stack is deliberately lean, with polyester fibres adding surface cushioning but little contouring, so the feel is sturdy before it is plush. Edge reinforcement is a useful inclusion on an open-coil build because linked springs can feel less settled at the perimeter, although customer experience suggests the border is not immune to softening. The double-sided design and four turning handles are more practical than cosmetic here; at 33kg in a double and 40kg in a king size, regular turning is a two-person job for many households, but it gives both sleep surfaces a chance to share wear. A one-year guarantee is short for a mattress sold on durability claims.

Open-coil firmness makes the Adagio most convincing for back sleepers who want a flat, braced surface and for some front sleepers who dislike their hips dipping into softer foam. Happier accounts repeatedly link the firm feel with reduced morning back pain, and several describe the support as stronger than expected for the money; that matches the spec, because compressed polyester over a tightened spring unit gives immediate resistance rather than slow sink. Side sleepers and curvier figures get the weaker end of the design, since the fibre layer does not give the shoulder and hip much room to settle before meeting the spring tension. The contradiction sits in durability and consistency: low-scoring accounts repeatedly describe early loss of firmness, central dipping and edges that compress when sat on, with one detailed account saying the mattress felt too soft despite being bought for its extra-firm billing. Temperature should be fairly neutral because there is no deep memory-foam layer trapping heat, while the damask-and-fibre surface is more traditional than breathable in the technical sense. Couples with similar weights may find the firm surface stable enough, but open-coil springs transfer movement more readily than pocket springs and are less forgiving when partners differ sharply in size. The Adagio suits budget-focused back sleepers wanting a very firm, traditional feel; those prioritising pressure relief, motion isolation or longer-term shape retention should look instead at a pocket-sprung or hybrid tier.

Specifications

Manufacturer specifications without the jargon, easy to scan and compare.

Double-sided

Turnable mattresses are ones which have the soft comfort layer fillings on both the top and bottom of the mattress. This means that you can turn the mattress to help prolong the lifespan of the mattress while also helping with even settlement over time. We generally prefer turnable double sided mattresses over single sided mattresses because they typically last longer and so represent a different value for money.

Extra Firm

Boasting an 'Extra Firm' rating, this mattress offers unparalleled support, ideal for individuals who prefer a structured sleeping surface or those with certain back conditions. However, be mindful, as it may fall short on plush comfort characteristic of softer options, potentially making it less suitable for side sleepers or those who favour a more cushioned feel.

Traditional open coil springs

Traditional open coil springs create a firm bedtime experience, transferring motion across the surface, a factor that might be undesirable for sleepers sensitive to disturbances. On the other hand, these systems are generally more cost-effective, making them a sensible choice for those seeking to marry budget considerations with performance.

Orthopaedic Support

This king-size sanctuary of comfort grants sterilised hypoallergenic filling that ensures sleep is not disrupted by common allergens. Furthermore, an impressive tally of 2000 individually nestled springs provides the spine with correct alignment, tackling backaches and promoting a healthy sleeping posture.

Fire Resistant

Ensuring safety during your peaceful slumber, fire resistance is a crucial feature that reduces the risk posed by potential accidents involving flammable materials. Furthermore, it demonstrates the manufacturer's commitment to adhere to strict safety standards, prioritizing your well-being over all else.

Reinforced mattress edge

A reinforced edge signifies a mattress feature where the borders have been fortified, adding a firmness to the perimeter. This enhancement not only provides bolstered support, but also prevents premature sagging, and in turn amplifies the durability and longevity of your sleep surface.

Soft White Fibres

Incorporating soft white fibres into the design equates to enhanced breathability and temperature regulation within the sleep surface. This, in turn, contributes to a sleeping environment that stays fresh and cool, promoting a more restful and comfortable night's slumber.

25cm deep

In terms of depth, 25cm can imply a mattress that provides significant cushioning, potentially offering improved comfort and support. However, this dimension also may require deeper fitted sheets, an additional consideration for the shopper.

Includes turning handles

Turning handles aid in the regular rotation of the mattress, thereby significantly extending its lifespan. Easy maintenance is always appreciated, and these handles streamlining the process by making rotation hassle-free and manageable.

Depth: 25cm

25cm is a great middle-ground for a mattress. Thick enough to house good quality materials and components while being thin enough to fit normal sheets ensuring you do not need to upgrade your bedding unnecessarily.

1 year guarantee

A 1 year guarantee is a stamp of approval. You can buy with confidence knowing that if anything bad happens during that year of ownership that is the result of a manufacturing defect, you will be covered.

Damask cover

The damask cover provides a plush, luxurious feel to your bed while still being durable and easy to clean. With a traditionally elegant design, it adds a touch of timeless aesthetic to your bedroom.

Frequently Asked Questions For The Romantica Adagio Extra Firm Mattress

The questions below are the most common ones BedBoy readers ask when comparing products in this category. Contact the editorial team with a different question, quoting P1396 in the subject line.

Absolutely, this Adagio mattress has an orthopaedic layer made from compressed polyester. This material and construction provide enhanced spinal alignment and joint support. If you suffer from backaches and pains, this feature could be particularly beneficial for you. As a result, it might improve your posture, comfort, and overall sleep quality. - Thanks, Gary
The Adagio mattress is designed to fit across a wide range of bed frames. However, it's worth noting that the depth is around 25cm, or about 9.8 inches. So, it would be best to check the suitability of your preferred bed frame against the mattress dimensions first.
The Adagio mattress is filled with soft polyester fibres which are durable and resilient. This material offers a balance of comfort and value for money, with the fibres compressed to form a soothing orthopaedic layer.
As the mattress is double-sided, you can prolong its life and maintain its quality by flipping it over every few months. Plus, it includes stitched turning handles for ease of use.
The Adagio mattress has a damask cover, a finely woven fabric that doesn't retain heat. Plus, this feature lends a soft touch and ensures a comfortable sleeping temperature.
Average-to-heavier back sleepers are more likely to benefit from the firmer build. Lighter sleepers may sit too high on the surface and get less cushioning from the polyester fibres.
Couples may notice some movement transfer because the open coils are interconnected rather than individually pocketed. The reinforced edge helps the usable width feel steadier, but it will not isolate motion like a pocket-sprung design.
Back sleepers who like a sturdy, traditional feel are the clearest match. The tightened open-coil unit and firm fillings are designed to keep the surface level and supportive.
Side sleepers may find it too unyielding, especially if they have broader shoulders, pronounced hips or an hourglass shape. The open-coil build offers limited local sink where pressure relief is usually needed.
It is double-sided and comes with turning handles, so regular turning is part of getting the best lifespan from it. That is a practical feature, not just a cosmetic detail.
It is a true extra firm mattress, rated 5 out of 5. Expect a flat, resistant surface with only light cushioning from the fibre layer, rather than plush sink or body-hugging pressure relief.

If you're looking for an ultra firm mattress without spending hundreds of pounds this is the mattress for you. Believe you me it is rock solid. The support is just fantastic. Just enough comfort to rate it better than lying on a slab of concrete lol and admittedly sometimes you might struggle to get comfortable, but boy oh boy when you wake up in the morning your back and neck pains from the day before will thank you for it. I absolutely love it. How firm is it Only two words are needed. Ultra firm. I'm in love with it.

One of the cheapest mattresses out there, but does a really decent job at supporting my back. Use to sleep on the floor half the time so it was a comfortable switch to extra firm. 1 month in now and my back does not click as much as it use to.
