About the Over Moon Traditional Spring Mattress

Last checked

The Little Big Dreams Over The Moon is a traditional open-spring mattress with a medium, 3 of 5 feel, aimed at the first proper-bed stage rather than the adult hybrid market. This is practical child-mattress territory. The support comes from connected springs rather than individually wrapped pockets, so the mattress is more about a broadly even platform than fine contouring around shoulders, hips and knees; compared with pocket-sprung children’s mattresses, that is a conservative construction, but an honest one for a wipe-clean, washable-cover design built around everyday family use. The comfort story is therefore fairly simple: gentle spring support, a breathable heat-regulating cover, perspiration control, and a water-repellent surface for small accidents. The removable cover washing at 40 degrees is the more useful feature here than any claimed luxury feel, because hygiene and repeat cleaning matter more on a child’s mattress than deep pillow-top cushioning. Anti-allergy, hypoallergenic and PVC-free materials also keep the spec pointed at sensitive young sleepers rather than adult pressure relief. The marketing calls it medium, although an open-spring unit can feel firmer under a lighter body because there is less weight to activate the spring grid and padding.

Families moving a child from a cot bed to a first single are the clearest audience, especially where the sleeper favours side sleeping or changes position often through the night. Sleep settles quickly in the stronger feedback, with comfort, value and the washable cover coming up repeatedly, and the spec supports that: a breathable, removable cover is genuinely useful when spills, overheating and night-time accidents are still part of the picture. The firmness feedback is mixed, not neutral. Criticism centres on the mattress feeling harder than its medium rating, with discomfort described strongly enough in more than one low score that a topper or replacement became part of the story; that contradicts the softer reading of the 3 of 5 label, so lighter children who like a cushioned surface may not get the give they expect. One longer piece of feedback also notes that the mattress feels relatively shallow at the edge when an adult sits on the bed, which is less about sleeping support and more about bedtime-story practicality. Back sleepers can get enough even support from the spring unit, but children who already prefer a firmer, flatter feel are the safer match than those who sink into softer foam. Best for younger side sleepers needing a washable, allergy-conscious first mattress. Less good for children who dislike firm surfaces, who would do better with a deeper pocket-sprung or foam-comfort children’s mattress.

It is too firm for us, I wouldnt call it medium firmness. we bought a different matress from dreams that was also medium firmness but more expensive and that is great, but i had to buy a matress topper for this one and fortunately its only for guests. It is like sleeping on something with no give in it, maybe it softens over time with use. It costs too much to replace it with a more expensive one so the lesson learnt is try it out in the shop if you can because you lose £48 delivery charges plus extra cost of the difference of a more expensive matress when swopping it.

I was a little sceptical about getting a sprung matress as previous matresses I'd bought and then returned at a similar price point we're awful, but this matress is excellent. It's the perfect softness, and you wouldn't know if even had springs in it. I bought this for by son's first big bed from sizing him up from his cot and he loves it. It's immediately obvious that it's great quality and very comfortable. He instantly got on really well with it. I couldn't recommend this enough.
